    ...This is KD5RRJ calling any station.

    Just curious if their are any other amateur radio operators on Baptist Board.

    I'm not a licensed ham operator, but I've spent many hours listening.

    Maybe (since they've eliminated the code requirements for a license) one of these days I'll try for the exam. Can you recommend any good study guides for the exam(s)?
    I suppose the ARRL would probably have some good ones.

    What level of license do you have?

    qrz.com has online practice tests. I kept taking the tests until I was 90% or better ten times in a row. Then I was prepared to take the test.

    I had a "No Code" license that expired in 2001.

    If you are interested, you may be able to renew your license without re-testing. I do not remember when the grace period ends.

    I have a no code general license. Several weeks ago I talked to a man near Seattle, WA from Eagle Pass, TX with a mobile radio in my car! It is a very interesting hobby.

    Good to hear from a fellow ham on here. We do not have an ARC in our area, and no repeater, so vhf/uhf is dead air. There are quite a few hams but you have to be on HF to talk. I am a unit director with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief communications and I serve as the RACES CLO for Maverick County.

    How are things in your neck of the woods?

    They also removed the advanced class license, now there is only general and extra and general has more band privileges than previous.

    We have tons of repeaters within a 100 mile circle of my location. Since they changed the ticket structure a lot of them have went silent. I won't start the code-no code, but I wish they would have left it alone....


    Kenwood T530s (tube transmit/solid state receive)
    Yaesu FT 400 (an econo box back up from 1 generation back)
    Yaesu Vx7r ( 220,440,2 met, 6 met HT)

    inverted V's or random wires through a transmatch for ant..
    Had the 400 in the semi going thru a screwdriver for quite awhile, took it out about a year ago....

    I agree, the code should have remained a requirement. I believe there will come a day when people will regret not knowing the code, but that is a different story.

    I have a Yaesu FT-100D that I use mobile and base. At home I have an G5RV inverted V aerial and use HAM sticks mobile. I use a Yaesu vx-5 "opened" as my HT mainly during disaster relief.

    At the time I tested I had a 4 and a 6 year old that could 'read' at about 8wpm... It really wasn't as hard as most let on....


    If 'they' wanted more Hams they should have just lowered the techinical aspect of the test and concentrated more on operating ethics and how to use the various modes. In todays arena of store bought radios(non repairable by the average ham without a serious 'lab' ) and crowded bands I think it would have been more benificial...

    But then again, no one wants my opinion... I am one of those ignorant creationist after all :D :D :D

    If you have or can aquire a solder gun and a multimeter its really not hard.

    There are tons of plans, and even a few kits, for building low power stuff.

    But don't limit yourself to radios... Its fully possible to aquire a station made completely of homebrew stuff.
    SWR meters, Keys, transmatch, Ant, the whole nine yards..


    I haven't tinkered in along time, but there is something magical about 'talking' to a guy hundreds of miles away on 5-10 hrs labor and a 9 volt.

    Plans? You say, tons of plans?.....Hmmmm. I would sure like to get my hands on some. I would really like to build a rig.... I have taken the cover off my radio once, but it was absolutely ridiculous, I couldn't work in that box, find or troubleshoot any problems, or even just follow a circuit. You've stirred my imagination...

    That will be my next project...now off to search the internet for plans and diagrams....
