Come on Salty, is this some kinda joke? Do you want to have a discussion about what might have been or how outlandish this article is? :smilewinkgrin:

 

McKinley Cantor wrote a very interesting book titled, "What if the South Had Won the Civil War." Not sure where you can find a copy now. I am sure it is out of print. The North and the South were negotiating to merge back into one union at the end of the book. Jeb Stuart III was the CSA President ... I forget who he had as the USA president.

I must say Cantor's book was much better than the article linked to this thread.

 

BTW I enjoyed very much Harry Turtledoves "GUNS of The South" Where a South African or Africaaner goes into the Past to the American Civil War and gives General Lee AK-47 and an endless supply of 7.62 mm ammunition. Along with training in modern warfare tactics. Interesting book though I disagree with his outcome of that senario.

 

Leaving out all these other 'alternate history' guesses, and speculations of some of these 'outfits,' I will offer 4 of my own ideas, all but the last of which, granted are only guesses, with most of the time-line as additional speculations. #4. is offerd as an absolute certainty.

#1. I predict that there would have been two countries, for a few years, at a minimum. Perhaps this would have been permanent, but I simply do not see it. I would have 'projected' the eventual re-uniting into one nation under one flag, some 10-20 years later, with the South having a larger proportional representation, than would otherwise have been warranted, under the US Constitution.

#2. I predict the institution of slavery would have continued for some additional 50-60 years, before it was abolished.

#3. I predict that 'race relations' would have been delayed another 20 years or so, from where they may be today, with such events as "Brown" and the Civil Rights laws happening some 20-30 years after they did.

#4. This is the one which is the most important, and of which I am absolutely certain, had this projected reunification occurred. And you may quote me on this one. (Read this slowly, for effect!)

"Finally and most impotuntly, Suh! All y'all who were bawn and live nawuth o' the Mason-Dixon Line and the O-HI-o Rivah, and west o' th' great state of TEX-us, would be propahly and respeckfully, speakin' and pronouncin' ouah motha' tongue known as th' English language, SUH!"

I read that short book as a kid, and very much enjoyed it. In fact, I got a used copy just a few years ago. It postulated that Texas seceded from the CSA, but was part of the 20th Century reunification of the 3 nations.
