Bonanaza

It's spelled "Bonanza".

It is on regularly on TVLAND. My mom watches it all the time.

 

Unfortunately, they're all dead except for maybe Pernell Roberts. If he's alive, he's got to be really old. Another of my favorites that ran even longer than Bananza was Gunsmoke. James Arnass (sp?) was in his 80's a few years back and still alive the last I knew. There's a Web site on him.

 

The Pernell Roberts information is interesting to know.

 

I remember that program well. I remember as a little fella that at one particular age...maybe 7 or 8 or 9...my bedtime came right after Bonanza ended. I always dreaded hearing the closing music cause that meant...bed time.

No way a show like that could ever make it now. Impossible. The culture as a whole would spit it out. Not enough nastiness, sex, lewdness, etc

I saw an episode recently on Nick at Night, or TV Land, or whatever its called. The 3 sons all thought that their father had been killed, and they all went in different directions trying to find the guy.

Turns out it was a mistake and Ben had not been killed, but little Joe didnt know that, and he found the man that had Bens gun. He wrestled it from him and aimed. But he couldnt shoot him.

When he got back home and discovered that Ben was OK, he told his story. Ben asked if he killed him since he thought the guy killed his dad.

Little Joe hesitated and said "No, I couldnt do it"

Of course, Ben was so very proud, because he had raised his boys to never kill anyone, except in self defense.

Well, today a "silly" and "stupid" idea like that would be laughed out of the script writers room. Not enough vengence, not enough blood and gore, not enough meaness and violence.

The other westerns from back then were pretty much the same way.

What a shame that TV cant be like that anymore.

 

I remember------- church started at 6pm-------and we'd make it home just in time for Bonanza!!!!!

Nothing like Daddy parchin' up some peanuts---------or poppin' some popcorn on the stove------and sitting there eatin' that stuff while watching Bonanza!!!!!!!!!!! Watchin' Little Joe get himself in trouble-------and Paw, Hoss, and Adam comin' to the rescue!!!!!!!

 

I wasn't sure whether to an "e" or an "a" after the "n".

 

Oh and Lucas McCain - the Rifleman

 

I have a preacher buddy of mine who modified his Marlin .30-30 to look and shoot just like Lucus McCain's

He could twrill it around by the lever, even!!!! Just like Lucus!!! Really!!!

 

We don't have a TV, but we have Bonanza on DVD and it's a favorite on Movie Night (usually Thursday).

My kids couldn't tell you the first thing about anything on TV today, but they know Hoss, Little Joe, Adam, Andy, Barney, Opie, the Douglasses, Mr, Haney (they especially love to hear me tell them about how Pat Buttram attended our church when I was a child and how he would tell us kids stories and do magic tricks for us), Arnold Ziffel, Uncle Jed, Granny, Jethro, Ellie Mae (after whom we have affectionately nicknamed our oldest daughter, because of her love of critters), Marshall Dillon, Festus, Joe Friday, Nick, Heath, Jarrod, Audrey, etc.

We also have a whole ton of old Westerns with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry and those folks.

 

Salty, we've found another oldie that we like even better than the old westerns. At Cracker Barrel I found the whole set of Robin Hood starring Richard Greene. Dh got those for Christmas and the whole family is enjoying them. There are over 100 episodes and they are about 30 minutes each.

Lorne Green was a newscaster during the 2nd world war and he was knicked the "voice of doom". He read the war dead over the radio. His prior experience was acting in Shakespearean plays at Stratford, Ontario.
