I keep hearing things like "it's hard to find music to use in a church service. Most Christian music is about God, not to God" or "when we sing in church we are to sing to the unseen audience of Jesus".

Where did these catch phrases or ideas originate in terms of the modern church? (Argument can be made from scripture for both ideas, and also for the opposite idea of singing our theology to educate.)

I'm trying to track down what modern movement or teacher teaches this idea: Warren, McArthur, Hybels, who?

It just caught on from many different sources. Actually, the sentiment spawns from the modern idea of worship where getting a certain feelin' is the object and not instruction in righteousness.

    No, Aaron, just the opposite...

Worship music is music sang TOO God.. Worshipping HIM.
Whether it is "Holy, Holy, Holy" or "Lord we lift your name on High"

What you describe is songs that make the singer feel good.

So, tinytim, you agree with the teacher I had last week who believes the church should never sing songs like "Old Rugged Cross" or new songs that are about God, rather than to God?

It's like I said. It caught on and naturally spawns from the modern idea of worship, not the Scriptures.

    nodak...

I really dont know who specifically started it. Probably not one person, but rather....many. My 1st thought is that it came from the converted hippies who brought their "Jesus music" into the church.(the body of Christ.)

And we all owe a great debt of gratitude to those brothers and sisters who blessed us to such a great degree.

    Praise God for it!

Noo.. Noo.. That's not what I am saying, I am saying there are different categories of Christian music.

I believe there are times and places for each type of song...

Look in your church's hymnal.. in the back before the index..
    There are categories of songs...

some for invitation, some highlighting Jesus' sacrifice... Look for a section titled, "Worship songs" or something like that...

There are some services I plan where the whole service is geared this way...

I am not saying other songs should not be used, but some songs don't fit the criteria for "worship songs"...

    Aaron...

Regarding the style of worship music that is sung directly to God, rather then singing *about* Him, you said...

So, we can logically conclude then that you believe that the scriptures do not teach that we should worship God???

I mean, you made if real clear. The modern form of worship music you are critical of is singing our worship directly to God, in worship of Him...and you said the scriptures do not teach that.

(Of course I guess you rip the Psalms out of your copy of the scriptures, since they are flooded with the very thing you say we should not do.)

    C'mon Aaron...open your eyes.

    Aaron...

There is nothing in the world wrong with the great Hymns. They are wonderful.

There is room for both, and their should be both.

You do not think logically, so no conclusion of yours is logical—least of all this one.

My answer is clear in context of the question, based itself on the modern thinking concerning worship which presupposes two anti-biblical premises: 1)That preaching and teaching is not worship, and 2)That the assembly is where one edifies himself and seeks a deep personal experience.

Thanks all! I had to laugh, then agree, discussing this with DH. He says we have gone from calling people to come in repentance and faith for rebirth to inviting folks to come have a few "warm fuzzy moments" with us at church.
