Do you collect coins?

I've got the States too (almost).

I've collected wheaty pennies since I was a kid.

I look through my pocket change each evening, nothing serious,
but I've got a good bunch.

I figure there's been a 300% appreciation in the value of my collection: it's probably worth $100. :tongue3:

I've collected coins since I was about 10. I haven't really actively sought coins much since I left home for college except when I attempted to put together a complete set of Peace Dollars a few years ago. I was able to obtain almost all of them, but I decided to get married so I pull all of the Peace Dollars I had recently purchased on eBay to earn money for the wedding/honeymoon/home. Because I had taken my time and purchased only high-quality Dollars for a good price, I made a small profit for my trouble.

Beyond that little exercise, I have a wide variety of U.S. coinage going back about 140 years, with some proof sets and a small number of interesting silver certificates.

 

I don't collect coins per se, but I do have a Canadian silver dollar for each year in Canada, 1948 to the present.

I also have one of each of the old British coins (now out of service) and one each of the new coins.

I have about 80 thrupennybits (three pence) which was one of the most common coins in pocket until about 1974, when it was done in with.

I started collecting in the late 1970s, at a radar site in Minnesota. We military guys were not allowed to join the local coin collector's club (by their club rules), so we started our own club! Left that site with about 200 Canadian and USA coins.

I now have over 5000 coins, about half USA and the rest from around the world. I have six complete sets of the State quarter series, because I bought direct from the US Mint (at a premium price!) to get them. I just bought 13 assorted coins at a flea market for $3.00, and found (when I got home to look in my catalog) that they are worth about $3.75! Total value of the collection is more than I want to say!

HIGHLY recommend coin collecting as a way to learn about other countries, BTW. Helps me to pray for our as-yet unsaved brothers and sisters, too.

Rob, your State quarters alone are now worth as much as $100, depending on condition. One dealer I have done business with is actually selling complete sets for over $150!
