The past week I've been getting a lot of pop ups, not just little click on me type of pop ups, but opening browser windows. Advertisments all kinds of junk, apparently I can insure my car and date russian girls all at the same time.
Anyway. I deleted cookies, browsing history. Run 2 anti ad ware programs, (spybot search adn destroy and adaware). Neither can find anything, and both have been updated.
What am I missing? And what can i do?

Give Malwarebytes Anti-Malware a go. It is similar to Spybot and AdAware, but works differently. It gets what they can't.

Also, scan your computer using Eset's Online Antivirus Scanner. Eset's AV is one of the top Av in the world and the online scan is free.

If Malwarebytes doesn't get it I will post a link to Osiris's guide.

malwarebytes said it needed a disc inserted before it could install, and spy doctor(second link)said I had to pay for it first.

This is taking over my computer, sometimes I can't even use it becasue of it. Last night I was bombarded by at least 10 browers opening and multiple tabs opening on each one.
Every scan I do can find nothing. i even searched majorgeeks for the AVG, and found there really is still a free version, contrary to the email they sent me, and even it found nothing at all.
    Now what can I do.

    1. Back up data files
    2. Format C: drive
    3. Re-install Windows (or better yet, Linux)
    4. Don't visit bad websites or open email or attachments from people you don't know.

SuperAntiSpyware is the best I have ever seen, if it can't find it, I doubt anything can. Get the free home version.

Run ccleaner before doing anything drastic like reformatting It is free. But it sounds like you have a nasty virus. My brother had one similar to yours and he resolved it without formatting. Nothing wrong with it but it is a lot of work and you have to have some knowledge.

It found 164 'items' and deleted them, had hoped it would help as my other cans didn't find those 164,and I just got a pop up when I got here.

It turns out I have this on my computer, got it running now, hoping for the best.
I've reformatted before, on my old computer, wouldn't even know what to do on this one. I hope not to have to do that, got a whole lot of stuff to back up.

I was thinking, I now have 2 anti virus programs, why haven't one of them found it. I have AVG, and Computer Associates, which has always worked fine for me till recently.

Reformatting is much easier than it used to be with earlier windows like 98.The disk will do most of it you just have to remake a new partition for it. There are instructions on reformatting and partition building on the net. The difficult part is moving files back and forth. A good suggestion for the future is to have a external harddrive your files sit on. This protects your files from corruption should your computer be infected. It keeps them private from the internet should someone hack your computer. It allows your computer to run more efficiently because it is not having to house all those files (runs faster). And you do not have to move files around when and if you need to reformat or get some serious hardware replaced.

I am using windows xp, and I've been searching the internet looking for a good priced external hard drive to move my files and pictures to it. I really hate having to do this, going to have to redownload all my programs, anti virus, malware, and other assorted related stuff. But first I have to find out anout my paid for anti virus which I bought and downloaed online to see what I will need to do to reinstall it.

I don't know where you are at but here we have a "Cheap Guys Computers" and some of the private stores can sell them about as cheap as you can get them anywhere.

As for an external hard drive, you best bet is to buy an internal drive and an external enclosure.

For the enclosure, I heartily recommend the Thermaltake BlacX-SE. Here's a picture of it:

The BlacX-SE allows you to pop in any SATA drive and make it an instant external drive. You can eject the hard drive and pop in another one at any time. The BlacX-SE model has the front cover to keep out dust as well as additional USB ports so it can also function as a USB hub. ;) The best price I found was on Buy.com and ZipZoomFly.com:
    http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=207466976
    http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10008009

(I have bought from both and they are good to go.)

As for the drive itself, it depends on the amount of storage you need. I recommend looking on NewEgg.com as they are the absolute best place to buy parts online, period (they don't have the BlacX-SE as the newer models are more stripped down). Here is a link to NewEgg's SATA drives:

(I have bought lots of stuff from NewEgg over the years and you can't beat 'em.)
