Navy - big change

Most of the Marines I know would want it named Department of Marine Corps.... :tongue3:

 

They've been one Department, with the Marines and the Navy still fighting each other, for a LOOOONG time. Why change the name?

BTW, EVERYONE knows the USAF is better than any of the other branches! LOL!!!

I have to relate something that happened to me before I got into the USAF.

I was taking the physical fitness test for entry into the USAF Academy. (The test is used for all of the Academies, but I was trying to get in USAFA). One of the measures of fitness was ability to do chin-ups. The minimum requirement for the Air Force was 6, and the Army was 5 (I think -- WAY too many years ago!), while the Navy was 2!

Does that mean Air Force officers have to be three times as fit as Navy officers?

BTW, I passed with 7 chin-ups! I went to the USAFA, but resigned my appointment after a few months because I felt a Higher Power telling me He wanted me elsewhere. I did spend 20 years as an enlisted man in the AF, and serving our Lord as a Sunday School teacher and as a deacon. To this day, my USAFA transcript says I left because of "inability to adapt to a military environment". :laugh::laugh:

Of course, SOME would say USAF is NOT a military environment! J/K!!!

They all serve their functions and should remain separate--just as they separated the Air Force from the Army/Air Corp a long time ago. I'm an ex Air Force sergeant.

 

My dad was 30+ years in the Navy. My father-in-law was 30+ years USMC. So I'm kind of torn... I did enjoy telling my FIL that his check was from the Department of the Navy!

Of course, I was Army!

 

I couldn't vote. There is no option for a Coast Guard Veteran.

A name change would have very little real effect, except in recored keeping.

The missions of the Navy and the Marines are very different. It would make more sense to create a new Department of the Marines. As has been mentioned, the Army Air Corp became the Air Force, and It has proven a very successful transition. The problem with this option is that it would be costly at a time when our economy is not in the best contition.

 

I think if there is to be a merging it should be USAF and Navy, along with Army and Marines. Ari Force and Navy both deal with ships of various types and have specialties in information gathering technologies.

The Army and Marines both share similar things as well.

 

Based on the very little I know about it, I would be against it, although I am all for consolidating the Army and Air Force, similar to what it was before they were seperated.

 

Yeah, I can just see it now: flying submarines and aircraft that doesn't sink when it crash lands in the water; it's just steered to land. :laugh:

 

If I am not mistaken, and similar to what some others have pointed out, the Marine Corps is and has actually been under the Department of the Navy for many years. Likewise the same is true for the Coast Guard, in times of war, and is also true, I believe for the Merchant Marines.

I could be wrong about this, I admit, considering I am going on only my memory, however.
