I got a free year of Carbonite when I bought my tax software from H & R Block. I don't know if it'll do all it claims or not, since I've had no occasion to test it. I do know that it backs up any new stuff every day, because the dialog box says it's doing it.

Don't know the cost but if you don't want to mess with other drives it is quite a nice option.

Most external drives come with software that backsup at the moment that new documents are saved.

There are also third party softwares that do the same. I use NTI's Shadow to backup all of my security .wmv files to a network drive in the garage. Works great.

Bob you do not need this. You just need an external hard drive.

Good advice. I do not trust data in any online storage company. Especially any financial or medical data. They probably a firewall, anti-spyware software, etc. but that can all be violated. With an external hard drive it cannot be tapped when the computer is turned off, or if you unplug it from the computer when you are not backing up data or using the data. When it comes to this type of information caution is the golden rule in my view.

On advantage is that it is off site backup. Take one EHD and put it somewhere else, like a safe deposit box. Also consider encrypting it.

I have both external HD backup (time machine) and Carbonite~~figured in the event of a fire or theft or freaky lightning thing the external wouldn't be that useful...
