Once in place it will facilitate real time tracking and archiving of everywhere your car has been. Maybe the Amish have a few extra horse and buggies for sell, may become big business opportunity.

I don't get the difference.You still have to pay a tax for how much you drive only the government is not tracking it. The tracking alone would add to the bureaucracy. Couldn't get more inefficient.

Hmmm....perhaps they are more interested in knowing where everyone is and has been than in the tax.

You have absolutely no knowledge of what you are talking about.

Gas taxes are added to the price of gas at the pump and are collected by the individual gas stations at the time of the retail sale of the gas. The taxes are then directly paid to the State and Federal governments by the gas stations.

The oil companies do not pay these taxes. The oil companies do not receive these taxes.

These taxes have absolutely no impact on oil company profits.

The price of gas would be lower by the amount of tax no longer collected by the gas stations if the government were to switch to a mileage tax.

Consumers are not stupid.

You never heard me call anyone or anything evil in this thread. If you look closely, my objection was the combination of the tax and ability to raise prices at the pump. With them charged together you can easily see the bottom line. If you pay one at the pump and the other through the mail and can be deceiving.

Lets see buddy, if I drive an economy care I might pay $20/wk for gas. Driving a guzzler may cost me $60/wk gas. You don't see anything in this picture?

They are stupid if they think the milage tax will not be collected. The guy with the new Prius will pay the same milage tax as the guy with 1975 454 3/4 ton Chev getting 6 mpg.

While it does punish them, it's not the purpose..
The intent is to increase revenue to the govt. It does take away the incentive to purchase a higher MPG vehicle... The tax on a gallon of fuel, is the fairest tax scheme there is, and promotes conservative driving, and buying more fuel efficient vehicles......

Which could actually save the gas guzzler in taxes if he is now paying taxes on miles driven and not gasoline consumed. Unless of course they decided to use a multiplier to adjust for the type of vehicle driven. Econo cars are a 1, Mid-size a 1.5, and Gas-guzzlers a 2. Mopeds should have a multiplier less than 1 ;-)
