Thing is...they can't handle it. That is why they employ the older children to handle it. Making children out to be foster parents is also not supported in Scripture.

It is if the parents forbid it, and don't let daughters go to college. I think that's terrible.

It is if you follow Gothard and he tells you it will cause a miscarriage.

That is a real tragedy and absolutely horrible and I would say is infecting and corrupting the gospel. And it does not make Gothard okay.

But your sophomore is living at home because she wants to or has no other option. That is entirely different from following someone who tells you that you must live at home until you marry, as Gothard does.

Gothard also has wacky spiritual warfare teachings and teaches the generational bondage stuff.

When someone claims to be teaching biblical principles and is not doing so, preachers should be warning their flock against such a person, not emulating him or using his teachings. Good luck when you stand before God if you as a preacher are promoting Gothard to your flock, is all I can say.

I agree. Many years ago I attended a Gothard seminar. I was not that impressed but I don't think it is a cult. Too many people accuse those they disagree with as being a cult. Likewise, I never wanted 19 or 20 children, but I don't see these parents as child abusers.

"And God said unto him (Jacob), I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply" Genesis 35:11. Jacob had 12 sons and several daughters. God spoke to Jacob. God wrestled with Jacob. God communed with Jacob. Not once did God reprove Jacob for his many children as you do this family in Arkansas whom ye know not. Your position and talk of what is and is not "responsible" regarding someone who has more children than you think proper is a doctrine contrary to the Word of God. I counsel thee to go read the Scripture (all of it) at least 200 times through while withholding further comment on such things and see if God's Word does not change your mind.

Any family with more than one child employs the older children to help out. They have assigned the other children to do some of the general things that other people...gasp....count on daycare to do! Yet I don't see a condemnation of daycare!

My older children help with my younger children. My third child helps with the fourth. It just happens in life. Once I had my second child, the first one stepped in for me numerous times. When I had my third, my second child became a second mom and the kids will even call her mom sometimes. Does that mean I'm neglectful? Absolutely not. But I will ask them to give the one a bath so I could spend time with the other going over schoolwork or doing some quiet reading with them. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

And that is a personal choice. Truth is those values were more common not so very long ago.

It is weird but not having a Cabbage patch doll is on no consequence.

When you show me that the gospel is being perverted by him I will be the first to stand against it.

Of course it is I only mentioned that because I wanted to be clear that I do not sanction that teaching but it is in no way harmful either. Just a different set of values.

Mine do as well. It is a regular practice, it is a common practice all across America. And it teaches responsibility, family values, and leadership as well as how to teach others. A very good practice.

Non Sequitur. There is a difference between having a child lend a hand and for a child to be in charge from the moment they awake, to get the other child dressed, brush their teeth, make sure they eat, etc. That is parenting, not helping out. I have no problem with a true "buddy system", but what the Duggards employ cannot and should not be deemed as such.

If you see no difference, I don't know what else to say.

It's one thing to do this on your own and another to raise your children according to a man like Gothard.

    http://www.rapidnet.com/~jbeard/bdm/exposes/gothard/general.htm

Gothard redefines grace to a work. That's just part of his problem. Veinot, who spent hours talking with Gothard and Gothard's right hand men over a period of many years, says that Gothard's understanding of grace is akin to the Roman Catholic view.

Using the word employ denotes they are employees who applied and were hire to do a particular job, receiving compensation for their labor. This of course is not the case, as they have no choice nor are they compensated.

Ann, there are lots of things we cling to that are not specifically prescribed or commanded in the Scriptures. Do the Duggars have the freedom to have as many children as they want... sure.

Does that mean that is what's best for all concerned or that they should???

    That is the question...

    Get a load of this:
    http://www.pfo.org/evol-fad.htm

This is the problem with this family - they follow Gothard.

Why does anyone endorse this guy? Why are not preachers warning their flocks?

I used the word correctly as it is defined.
    Main Entry: 1em·ploy
    Pronunciation: \im-ˈplȯi, em-\
    Function: transitive verb
Etymology: Middle English emploien, from Anglo-French empleier, emploier, emplier to entangle, apply, make use of, from Latin implicare to enfold, involve, from in- + plicare to fold — more at ply
    Date: 15th century
1 a : to make use of (someone or something inactive) <employ a pen for sketching> b : to use (as time) advantageously <a job that employed her skills> c (1) : to use or engage the services of (2) : to provide with a job that pays wages or a salary
2 : to devote to or direct toward a particular activity or person <employed all her energies to help the poor>

Am I the only one even concerned that the kids are being raised as professional actors?.. That is just not normal...

I am not against big families.. like i said, by grandmother had 15 kids, and they did fine...

but this family is just weird into Gothard, and using their children to be extra parents because the mom and dad can't do it themselves..

Then using their kids to make money by being on TV.. This will mess up the kids eventually...

Brother I love ya but this is hyperbolic

The first one is not related to the second and the second is a mischaracterization.

And you determined their motives how? When did it get determined this will mess up the kids and who determined this?

As one who grew up under Gothard's teaching, let me echo the above sentiment.

That boogerhead is captial "D" dangerous.
