Just wondering. I realize most here will only be going to it if they buy a new computer and all.

For those wanting to upgrade I can tell you that, as of right now, there is no upgrade path from XP to Win7. Vista can upgrade to 7, but I'm not sure whether it has to be the same version or not (Basic, Pro, Ultimate).

For anyone with a .edu email Microsoft is offering Win7 upgrades for $29.99 (LINK). The UK version will be £30, I do believe. Offer expires Jan.3, 2010.

Along the same line, Microsoft is still offering Office 2007 Ultimate for $59.95 for students/anyone with a .edu email address (LINK). I don't think this is offered outside the US. I'm not sure when this offer expires, but they have been doing it on and off since Office 2007 was released.

Can I go from Windows98 to 7?? LOL - Actually, I'm off that computer for a whole 8 months now!

But we're onto Macs now except this laptop that I'm currently on. I don't believe we're going to 7 anytime soon and we DEFINITELY didn't get Vista.

Tech republic inicated you have to upgrade version to version. Win 7 also is a all or nothing, there is a clean install or you can install over vista but all your stuff goes in windows old directory and you have to reinstall programs.

I have an upgrade coming when released. I bought a new computer a few days after the free upgrade was announced :)

I had beta on a couple units briefly and on one it was like a slug and the other was pretty swift. Former a 2.7 p4 and the later a duo 2.6.

Supposedly it will run nicely on the older machines but the p4d did not handle it well at all for some reason.

I've got a buddy who is a Microsoft MVP so I have been running the final version for a few weeks now. ;) Gotta say it is very nice. I did a clean install, but I took my time to make sure I wasn't stooting myself in the foot. Back all my documents and all up, as well as my drivers... only had to install one little program and make a couple of clicks to install all my drivers since 7 uses the same 64-bit drivers for everything.

One thing I should mention I have a security camera program that I require and it is written for xp, but absolutely will not function on Vista. While I had seven on one of the rigs I put it on and it worked fine.

I don't know how this will work out for other software the Vista eliminated but I am looking forward to that part since I really don't have room on my desk for the two computers I have running :tongue3: though I do enjoy having the xp rig for games:thumbs:

If your CPU is capabale of virtualization, you can run XP within Seven.
    Windows XP Mode
    How to set it up

As for games, it depends on how old they are. I have read where some have problems running stuff like Diablo and StarCraft, but some get them to work. Newer games seem to work just fine. I run Battlefield 2 without a problem and it is a few years old now.

I read of this but from what I could tell you had to be running one of the top two versions of win7, in other words the high priced ones, in other words not in my lifetime or checkbook

The Myst series are on my xp due to their great dislike of Vista. Don't know if they will do 7 or not.

I plan on going from Vista to 7, that is, unless I get so aggrivated with Vista again that I drop back to XP again.

I never did take a-liking to Vista

I've been limping along on this old computer until an improved OS came along.

Maybe for Christmas I'll get a laptop :praying:

Windows 7?? Egads I'm still staying with Windows 2000! Intentionally!! At least until the support ends completely in June of 2010.

I have lots of reasons...but why waste the electrons listing them? You're going to use the O/S you want and so will I.

I even have several computers with Windows 98SE (very deliberately) on them!

Speaking of Windows 98SE, there are two sites on the internet where most of the remaining Windows 98 enthusiasts gather-yes I said enthusiasts! www.mdgx.com and the Win 98 forum at www.msfn.org/board

I don't change until enough people have confirmed that it actually works.

I still have a computer with Windows95. It is the only one my architectural program works with...it would cost me $1200.00 to install a new program!

    Cheers,

    Jim

I hear ya, Jim. I had a very nice architectural suite that worked in 95/98, but not XP or beyond. I miss it. None of the newer ones seem to be as easy or versatile.

Like I said, I am running 7 and have been for a few months (now on the retail/final version). This one will be much smoother on launch than Vista, XP, or even 95. :D It is actually functional before a service pack. [IMG]

Trotter, I was told that there is a way to fool xp into accepting the drawing program (Turbocad Professional) but I haven't tried it, and besides, I would need a lot more memory to do it.

I don't do drawings anymore, but I kept the old computer just in case.....

    Cheers,

    Jim

Too bad. Win7 is actually good. Vista wasn't too bad once it got a service pack (or two), but it was slow and used too much as far as resources. Some of the neat stuff from Win7 may be worked out for XP by third party vendors (like the new taskbar).

Good luck with Linux as that's a whole 'nother ball game.

You may want to check out Linux Mint, it is Ubuntu/Debian based and very easy to install and user friendly. I have all the church computers and my personal computers running it with no problems.

Ubuntuhas climbed to the number 2 operating system in the world in just a few years. It is built on the Debian/Linux frame work and is a point and click operating system for Windows converts. I have only had person go back to windows and that was my daughter, all others have taken to it in less than a week. I began with version 7.10 in late '07 and do not need a firewall or an antivirus program. Both are available fr a point and click price as are about 25,000 business quality programs making the system perfect for low budget business'. With the installation of Wine you can also run MS Office and windows games, Wine is, of course, free.

Since the download is an iso file you need Nero or one of the free disk writter programs that support writing an image to disk. After the disk is burnt the CD is a live copy of Ubuntu and you can boot the computer from the CD (runs slower than from install) and test it for compatability with your computer.

If anyone needs help, I'm new here but will be hanging, unless fundamental Baptist teachers are shunned, and wil be happy to help all.

the lies about Linux and Ubuntu are MS lies because of the sudden growth of the Ubuntu OS to the number two position.
