    It's missing the comma. It should be, "Do good to thy friend to keep him, to thy enemy to gain him."

    It means be nice to your friend and you'll keep a friend. Be nice to your enemy and you'll gain a friend.

    That is like expressing your anger, or penting it up, when the object of your anger is not there. You are the only one to suffer that anger.
