NEW YORK — Microsoft Windows 7 is a slick, much improved operating system that should go a long way toward erasing the bad impression left by its previous effort, Vista.

If you've been holding off on buying a new computer, Microsoft Windows 7 will be a good excuse to get back into the game. And if you've been weighing a Mac versus a Windows PC, then you should know that "7" pushes the scales on the Windows side. Windows is now easier to use and better looking than it was before, while maintaining its core advantage of cheaper, more diverse hardware.

However, most PC users should not take the release of Windows 7 as a call to action, or feel that they have to run out and buy the software for use on a computer they're planning on keeping. The upgrade will most likely not be worth the time or money, much less the effort of hosting a Windows 7 "launch party" as Microsoft suggests.

Went into Staples to snoop their computers yesterday. They had one HP Laptop and some net books, all others were missing - today all new win 7 computers.

They are looking to really sell the hardware.

At the prices they are asking for windows 7 that is definitely the only way to buy it as the article suggests.

Just a reminder STUDENTS with a .edu address can get it for waaaaay cheap! Wonder how many will get a godaddy .edu address for a few bucks and avail themselves of MS's offer ????

I know quite a few who are upgrading to 7, but they are all geeks like me. ;)

Amazon.com announced that Windows 7 is the biggest pre-order item they have ever sold.

... And then there are the geeks, like myself, that date back to the early seventies that have kept up with the testing and reporting Techs at places like ZD Net and Tech Republic that will never purchase another Windoze OS. Windoze7, as alluded to, is a re-release of Vista but they have included the WindozeXP Core to solve the hardware and software problems causing an even bigger kernel glut than ever before, requiring more RAM and resources to run the OS.
... And, as if that were not enough, this summer, as MS dumped their plan to rewrite the kernel and make it small and attack resistant, like the Linux Kernel, they went into disaster recovery mode ad dumped all their plans in favor of saving face on Vista debacle. And during their 180 degree turn around from innovation back t holding the party line they patented their Key Stroke Mapper that reports to one central device and many Techs, including myself, thought it must be for implementation in Windows7. I do not see MS pushing the new patent as being for sale to business'. Where did this wonderful patent that will invade the privacy of every human being go? Is it also locked inside the bloated Windoze7?
... With the sale of Widoze 95+12 (that's the descriptive code name for Vista) I made the switch to the Windows clone, Ubuntu and will remain there, I believe. When a body considers the cost, free, the 24 hour support service, free, and the cost of the business quality software, free, it just makes sense to forget MS, their unfulfilled promises ad their extremely over priced software. But then, what do I know?

"WindozeXP Core to solve the hardware and software problems" that is only in the professional and up versions from what I've read.

Again, care to give a link to back this up?

I can handle Windows bashing (as I have done it myself), but you are so far off base it is beyond funny anymore. Win7 stayed on the same course it had been on since it started development. MS built off of what worked and was liked in Vista... they actually listened to people's input. My buddy Alex was in on the testing since the get-go and has shown me how it came along.

Win7 does use a little bit more resources than XP did. But, if you want to turn off the eye candy and new tweaks, it will use less. Me, I like the eye candy and my computer can run it and never notice the resources used. I also use other tweaks and apps to customize my system, and the resources for them are not noticed. But, then, I only do this for a living... maybe I don't have a clue.

Hosting a party over the release of an operating system?

I'm missing something. What's so innovative about a Key Stroke Mapper?

Again, I'm missing something here. Why would Microsoft sell their patent?

... You sound bitter and I'm not willing to go int the back biting mode, sir. Just as I explained though, if you had taken what you read and put it into the context it was written in, I read the article at Tech Republic, in a white paper they issued and then all notice of the patent faded away, to where, MS is not selling it. Since you claim to make your living in the IT world it is not unreasonable to expect you to dig up your own link to the White paper that any tech should have read, is it?
... As for your buddy, Alex, he may love Seven, a lot of folks will, but that does not erase the inherent problems with Seven. Now, I don't know when Alex got on board with testing Seven but I do remember Mary Jo Foley and other Techs that make their living testing MS software issuing white papers proclaiming the fact that Seven would have a totally rewritten kernel that removed the left over trash code from as far back as Windoze 3.1. That was just before Vista, aka win95+12 was proven to be a disaster that was arrogantly foisted upon the public.
... As for eye candy, I also am such a freak, that is one among several reasons that I chose Ubuntu over the "more geeky" versions of Linux so in comparison t Ubuntu, Seven loses there with windoze converts also, it still uses less resources to achieve the same effects.
... Unlike yourself, I wish you well and a good adventure with your costly Seven venture but I'll continue to convert as many as I can to Ubuntu and to following our LORD. Linux has not suffered a virus attack since, I believe, 11/96 and of course God has never failed.

... Not much for business envioroment but in my home and reportig to where?
... IBM patented the PC so they would have exclusive rights to distribution of the product. SC Johnson patents their formulas to keep others from copying their products to quickly. Pharmaceuticals are patented to maximize the return on the drug companies investment in their development. I couldcontinue but it already reeks od redundancy.

Did not comment on what you would purchase, just putting some info out for all to know that they might not have known.

I got to try to install Windows 7 Ultimate evaluation copy last week. Did not do good for me. It ended up with me being frustrated at not being able to get everything working and putting XP Pro back in. I hope not everybody has this experience.

You would have to do a clean install to come from XP. while I was coming from Vista, I did a clean install anyway (did the same coming from XP to Vista).

I'd be happy to help you out with 7 if you want.

From the get-go, actually. He was also a beta tester for Vista, Office 2007, Office 2010, and everything else that has come out in the last five to six years. He is also a MS MVP... but he is no fanboy. He multi-boots 7, XP, Unbuntu, and a flavor of Unix (not sure which).

I do apologize for the tone of my post, Bill. I realize you are hard-core Linux and dead set against anything from Microsoft. I get miffed when anyone bashes something they have no experience with, but I should not have spoke out of turn.

I did search for the white paper, both at TechRepublic and via Google but came up empty. Do you remember anything else about it that might help?

... No, I'm sorry but I don't do well at remembering unless I put into my log book and seeing as how I just need tune-ups and work arounds for folks in my Church Family I made no note of the date nor the address.
... Just so you will understand, my unit in Nam averaged 3.5 men dead every week we were there and I learned early o that to lead my men I needed to be very open with them and at the same time had to be able to not have known them the day after their deaths. My feeble memory is a defense against insanity. And I apologize, rereading my reply to you it is more harsh than it should have been.

Thanks for the offer but I'll just stick with XP for awhile. It works for everything I want to do. The Windows 7 was only good until June 1 of next year anyway. I might change my mind though. I reserve the right to do that!

You do realize that these are mutually exclusive, right?

Or, alternatively, you could answer the question that I asked.

    You said:

    I then asked:

You then told me why business have patents. That's fine, but I already know why businesses have patents. What I don't know is why Microsoft should sell their patent. Please educate me.

... I'll admit to expecting a certain amount of common sense and to sometimes not finding it. The answer to your question was enfolded within the examples I gave you but to be direct, MS would have patented the product to keep others from infringing o their right to make a profit frm the sale of the product and now it isn't for sale or is it?

I'll admit to being surprised that you are evidently incapable of responding to what I actually wrote, preferring instead to respond to what you think I wrote. Instead of implying that I'm stupid, would it be possible for you to respond to what I actually asked instead of what you think I'm asking?

No, you didn't answer my question at all. Somehow, you thought my question was why does Microsoft have a patent? Search my response very carefully. Where did I ask you why Microsoft has a patent?

Let me spell it out for you.

I am NOT asking why Microsoft has a patent. I am NOT asking why any business has a patent. I have never asked why anybody patents anything. I understand the reason for patents.

    Let's try this again.

    You wrote the following.

Again, I ask, why would Microsoft sell their patent? Understand that I am NOT asking why Microsoft has a patent. I'm asking why Microsoft would push the new patent as being for sale. Maybe I'm completely misreading this, but it appears that you're being critical of Microsoft for not pushing a patent as being for sale. I'm asking why they would sell the patent.

Since you already think you're smarter than everybody else, maybe you could use your big brain to explain what you wrote.

Finally, I don't know if Microsoft's patent is for sale and I don't really care if it is.

I have 7 in the bullpen. I hope I can start using some of the softare Vista wouldn't shake hands with. Hundreds of dollars in theological software sat on a shelf while I waited patiently for 7.
Trotter, you may be my appointed guru for going from Vista to 7.

One more time: I hate Vista and am glad to get rid of it.
