An essay on "Your Child and Your TV" is now available online at

    www.mikesnow.org

Years ago it was distributed widely through the homeschooling office of Dr. Moore and others. Elisabeth Elliot also used it for one of her radio programs.

    The essence of the essay:

I will walk with integrity of heart
    within my house;
I will not set before my eyes
    anything that is base.

    –Psalm 101

    Hmmm

I did not word the above notice clearly and fear that many may have misunderstood.

The article, "Your Child and Your TV", is posted in its entirety to read at the above link. I hope people did not take 'available' as meaning 'for sale.'

And anyone may freely quote, copy, print [just copy and paste it to your word document], etc. If you print for distribution, all that I ask is that you note, "Used by permission. See www.mikesnow.org/"

Or if you want a copy of the original tract, just send me a SASE [self-addressed, stamped envelope] For my address see 'contact' button on the link above.

I did not misunderstand what you typed. I don't understand, though, why you posted a link to a very lengthy sermon against television in the homeschool section of the board. That baffles me a bit.

I did so because most of the interest in this topic came from home schooling families and from the late Dr. Raymond Moore, the father of the homeschooling movement.

It was homeshooling families that saw the importance of the subject for Christian famiilies, and distributed the tract to their friends and churches.

BreakPoint Commentary on Children and Media

Today's BreakPoint commentary raises some of the concerns raised by Your Child and Your Tv.....Today, it is Your Child and Your Tv, and His computer, and Her smart phone....no end to the media life.
Charles Colson’s BreakPoint covers the issue of your children and the media that envelope them, here:

My children would probably say, "TV? Ewww! Why would we want to watch TV when we can go outside and do something?"

We don't have a TV and they seem to be perfectly fine with that.

You're going to have to stand in line.

My oldest son lived in a tent from April to October when he was 13. He cooked and ate fish, rabbits, and squirrels that he caught or shot. He had a little writing desk and a bookcase for his books. He had friends over. He loved it. Some people are absolutely horrified that we allowed him to do that.

Of course, his grandfather and I always kept an eye on him (without his knowledge) and if he needed anything, it was just a simple walk through the woods back home. And yet, there are people who think this was an awful thing to do.

I always find it funny that people think it's so awful that we give our children chores to do.

That was great, John Deere. [Incidently, my John Deere ( 4240) is the only tractor that I have trouble with in the winter if I don't use plenty of power service or some no 1 if it goes below 0...that darned glass filter on the side...now i keep it covered so it gets heat from the block]

We were blessed when my kids were growing up...nine years with the National Park Service where you did not get TV reception. [I considered one job at Death Valley where it was a 40 mile drive to get your mail.]

My grandparents had a very large farm, much of it abutted (sp?) by a couple thousand acres of very rarely used state park land, so we were really out in the middle of nowhere.

When I talk to the kids in my classes about what it was like when I was growing up, they don't believe it. It's completely foreign to them.

My wife and I are trying to replicate that as much as we can because we believe it fosters their imagination, self-reliance, and just gives them a better view of the world and their place in it. That's one of the reasons we're the way we are (as my wife puts it, "We're just one laptop away from being Amish!").

Sorry about your Deere, by the way.

Where we live, is a very large enclave of Amish families and we have several friends who are Amish. In fact, both my wife and I have learned much from them.

As for the food, you're right. They know how to cook. The only problem is that it's so rich, I can't eat very much of it.
