I attended a "funeral" today. The grave-site service was at 12 noon.
The church service was at 3 pm. Thus the casket was not at the church service. The service lasted about 1 1/2 hours, which was immediately followed by a fellowship time with light refreshments

Have you every been to a "funeral" with that format?

Yes, she is now face to face with our blessed Lord! :jesus:
Her husband is a pastor - who was just called by church this past Sunday. Please pray for Pastor Mitchell (this is not the Rev Mitchell on BB)

I have been to a "celebration" or two. A bit more light, celebratory, "family", memories.

I have a friend who, when he dies, wants to have ice cream at his funeral.

Our church does funerals slightly differently but I've not heard of a funeral such as you mentioned.

We try to encourage the family to have visitation from 7-8PM and then the memorial service at 8. Once the service is over (usually around 9-9:30), there continues to be visitation time. Most of the time, the family is out by 11AM. The burial the next day consists of the family meeting at the church, saying their "good-byes" if the body is there and then heading to the cemetery where there are some final words, maybe a song, then a prayer and then everyone heads to wherever the food it (might be at the family's, or the church, or a friend's house - or even a restaurant).

Evening funerals are becoming more popular around here. It makes sense, actually as fewer and fewer employers are willing to let people off to go to a funeral.

I dont know, Salty. Having a funeral (which is for the family and friends to say their good-byes) after the burial would not sit well with me at all. even if the deceased is in a closed casket their body is still there. Having a funeral without them would not be a funeral... unless they were just going to have a wake instead of a funeral?

funerals to-day all have different formats, especially with cremations done instantly and funerary services following by several days or even weeks.

    Cheers,

    Jim

When I croak, I hope people PARTY at my funeral. What could be more wonderful than leaving behind this old earth and seeing JESUS for the first time?

Just stamp my coffin "Return to Sender," crank up some lively music, serve the food, and wear comfortable clothes at my request. If you don't, I'll come back to haunt you!

The OP isn't a funeral per se, it's a memorial service. Been to many, and they're usually quite nice. Then again, any funeral or memorial which I attend, where I'm not the guest of honor, is a nice one to me.

Generally, a memorial service is used when the burial was some time previously by days or even weeks, to give folks from out of town to get home for the service, or for someone who died a long distance from his original home.

I thought it was a bit interesting to have the service following the burial though.
