She's in distress. I took her phone.

    http://stoptexting.blogspot.com/

She already wore away one phone. The cheapie she's holding is the replacement. LOL

I told her she's addicted to texting and must go cold turkey! She said she would be so bored, so I gave her the blog to alieve the boredom...and she can't get the phone back unless she keeps up the blog so people can see that teens CAN live without texting!

Feel free to jump on there and show your support. For one of us anyhow. hehehe

I have a 13yo, who doesn't have a phone. He can get one when he's old enough to pay for it himself. The same rule went with his older siblings. They didn't have phones until they were 16 and 18 respectively.

I refuse to just give my kids phones, and honestly don't understand the mentality of parents who do.

Send her to my house, Gina! I'll get her busy in no time at all. My kids know never to say the word BORED within hearing distance of me, because I will put them to work cleaning house! So, there's no such thing as bored kids here.:tongue3:

Of course, it's okay if I get bored. I'm the parent!

Hey, I know that feeling! LOL!
She is active in music and drama, and manages really decent grades on top of being an avid reader, so I'm still trying to figure out how she had TIME to do this or has time to be bored! Most of them dive for cover if they hear another say that horrid phrase..."I'm bored!" hehe

John, uh...okay. The mentality? I wanted them to have phones. They wanted phones. Therefore, they have phones. Now ya have it...the mysterious mindset of people who give their kids phones. :tongue3:

I was too active as a teen (Yes, I can rememebr that long ago) and didn't have time to get bored. Cell phones hadn't been invented, and my dad wouldn't have spent the money for me to have one. Of course, he never spent any money on anyone if he didn't have to do it.

That's the cool thing with AT&T. They're CHEAP! I pay ten bucks per extra phone line, and the phones were all free with contracts. I tried Sprint before and they were way too expensive, and on top of that they billed me when I moved to a place that didn't have Sprint service, which they stated in my contract they would NOT do! Sprint also charged me what I thought was way too much for my "insured" damaged phone. AT&T totally replaced the damaged phones and didn't charge me a CENT! For a family of seven who uses cell phones a lot, they're ideal.

I'm with ABC - No "bored" around here! LOL

OK - I figured it out though and 2700 texts isn't all that bad when you break it down. I HOPE I did this right.

I figured that was for 30 days. Let's figure during the school day, she's got 9 hours worth of time to text (yeah, like they never text in school ;) ) because 8 out of 24 hours she's sleeping and 7 she's in school. So each week, that's 45 hours to text. Multiply that by 4 and we have 180 hours. Add in 16 hours for each weekend day and that is 32 hours a weekend or 128 hours. Now we have a total of 308 hours. I'm going to add in one more weekend day and one more week day day to make it 333 hours she has available to text in one month. Divide the number of texts she had (2567) by the number of hours she has available, and that ends up at under 8 texts in an hour. That's not that bad, honestly (shhh - don't tell her I told you so). My daughter texts a lot and the thing is, it's small short texts. We text back and forth and just dealing with an issue like her staying late after school can eat up a number of texts. I'd say atleast 2-3 if not more depending on what's going on.

Both of my teens have cell phones and both of them were originally paid for by me. I got them Virgin Mobile phones with a minimum of $20 every 90 days to keep the phone active. I told the kids when they got the phones that I will pay the $20 every 90 days and that's it. If the phone runs out before that, then the phone goes dead. If they would like to add money to it, that's fine and they can do so. I would buy top-up cards for them to buy from me for this purpose. Even if they just topped up with their own money, I'd top up the $20 every 90 days. I didn't want to do cell phones but after one day of not being able to find my 10th grader when she was coming home from school (there was a bus mix-up), we went to cell phones when they are no longer homeschooled and are in the public school. They're now 17 and 19. When they got their jobs, I no longer paid for their phones - it's up to them to do what they want with them. My oldest just has the basic plan. My 17 year old texts a lot more so went with the unlimited texting for $20 a month which also gives her calls at 10 cents a minute. She pays about $25 total for the month for all of her phone useage. Not sure how much she texts but she does a lot especially since her phone is connected to Facebook and she gets updates as texts.

The problem with not having a cell phone today is that there are no more pay phones. You can't find them anywhere. I've found cell phones to be invaluable when there have been emergencies or when we're in places that we would not normally be able to be located. For instance, my daughter was hit in the open eye with a volleyball a week ago and I was able to be reached to take her immediately to the doctor because I had my cell with me. I was also able to reach my daughters when my husband was rushed to the hospital with an injury. I see today that cell phones are much more necessary than they used to be before.

So Gina - good for you for teaching your daughter a lesson. It should be interesting to see if she does anything with the blog :)

Hmm. I guess that isn't as much as it sounds like! They're not allowed to delete stuff without letting me know first (same with emails and stuff, I have full access and passwords and copies are auto sent to me), so I went through it and a lot are just little things like "ok" and "lol."

She is posting on the blog and seems more interested in it now. Maybe she'll find she enjoys writing...that would be awesome! I've got my writer in the bunch already, but I'll always take another!

I had texting taken off my phone ( I was charged by the msg). If you want to tell me something, leave a voice message. There might be a few instances where texting would be advantageous, but for the most part, it is unnecessary.

We have one phone, attached to the kitchen wall.....That's it! I don't need a phone semi-attached to my ear whilst walking down the street or driving my vehicle.

My girls grew up with the same set-up.....One phone!

Besides, wouldn't know what a text was!

    Cheers,

    Jim

My 13-year old doesn't have a cellphone, but I will probably let her get one once she gets her driver's license in a few years, just for safety reasons. I wouldn't want her to get in an accident or stranded somewhere without a way to communicate with us. We just use tracfone and only need it for emergencies.

As far as texting goes. . .I don't even know how and have no desire to learn.

See, on my plan, I pay $2 for 60 texts but I pay $0.25 a minute for any call. So it's cheaper for me to get a quick text message "Mom, I'm ready. Can you pick me up now?" than for me to get a call. So for me, texts are cheaper. But then again, I'm not on a monthly plan other than the small text plan I have.

Exactly. My 19 year old ran out of gas on a main highway and was able to call me to come help her. I'd hate to think of her having to try to find a phone or be "helped" by a stranger. Nope. She'll have a cell phone.

"Texting" has got to be one of the rudiest fashions of the day---not too, too long ago my wife and I had friends over for supper---those friends brought their teen age kid with them----while eating and conversing at the dinner table--the teen was "texting"---we'd ask the teen a Q--and we'd get a "Yes/No" answer at best----this teen "texted" from the moment they arrived to the moment they left----never conversing with us nor with her parents----yet the parents did nothing to stop the texting while in our company

aome adults can be the same way as teens---conversing with a live person---all along while having their eyes peeled to the phone screen

I hate phones equipped with texting----I have a neice who I overheard the other day---said during a given month---she sends and receives over 3000(three thousand) text messages

Well, she is now! Sometimes lessons learned are not easy ones. But I can guarantee that she'll not run that low again. :)

I'm with Ann & Gina. Both of our teens have phones. Part communication, part safety -- especially with driving.

And we all text (mom and I have learned how). Part of this is the ease of things - a quick text like "I'm back at school safely" gives us a quick OK that things are fine. The other part is that this is the way kids communicate today.
