I'm inexperienced at this whole being married to someone and actually liking them thing, so help!

Are women supposed to buy stuff for men too, or do we sit back and expect cool stuff and let it go at that?

Honestly, DH and I just try to get out to get a bite to eat one other day that week (V-day meals are expensive) and maybe get each other a card. But we're not big gift-givers and we're poor so we just don't really worry too much.

I guess just ask what he might want to do?

Cards for us. A meal if we can make it work. You'd think with no kids in the house, that wouldn't be a problem, but it still can be . . .

Gina, I'll bet he would LOVE a card with some ooey-gooey mushy stuff written in there. :love2: (That's only if he likes that kind of ooey-gooey stuff). Or make up some really cute little coupons for free things like a back rub, foot massage, a meal at his favorite eating place, or whatever he is into. That'd be fun! You are so good at words that I'll bet you could really make that special and crazy!

My parents always get each other a card for V-day. In fact, they have kept them ALL and at their 50th wedding anniversary last October, we displayed many of them.

True story - in 1974 they bought each other the EXACT same card! Ha!

Well, I'm single and I always get a TON of candy and what-knots from my students. So I always share the "loot" with my handicapped brother.

And I always buy my 80-90 year-old Sunday School widow ladies sometimes for V-Day. I figure it's been a long time since they got anything from a "beau".

And I always get my students some of those crazy hearts with the messages on them. I make them read them outloud and we laugh.

So, I guess what I trying to say is that there ain't no rules.........just have fun!

We usually just have a really special romantic dinner together. Around the dinner, 2 things: I usually make it here at home and do a special chocolate type dessert, and my DH usually gives me some type of pretty flowers. My husband is a chocaholic. I love flowers. Last year I ordered two Wilton mini heart whichamacallit pans - it's late and I can't remember what they're called, lol - the kind where the bottoms come out. I had found a recipe for an ooey gooey interlocking heart chocolate layered cheesecake thingy. He absolutely loved it. Anyway, they're versatile and fun and that's kind of my thing. Kind of off topic there with the pans, but anyway...

As far as gifts go, I try to find something that Jim will use. If he is journaling a lot, I may look for either a nice journal or pen, or both. If there is something he really wants to read but is talking himself out of for whatever reason, I just go to Amazon and get it from his waiting list. These are areas where he spends what little free time he has, so they fit well. Find that little something special that fits your husband. On the other hand, I am really bad at cards.
One thing we have chosen to do is include our daughters in our Valentines day. Dinner is always a seafood spread. They are a part of our love, and they won't be here forever, so they are included. This year we will be minus one away at college. Sniffles already. Jim also needs to get his Dove rose early so he can get it mailed to her. They get real and chocolate roses.
We will find a time that works for us to make a meal together and watch a video. For us an old BBC mystery.
    Find what works for you.

My wife usually puts together a little basket of cute stuff. 90% of it comes from the dollar store (we are poor, too), but she gets creative with it. I try to get her a card and something nice but inexpensive.

Affirmation is really important to men. Getting the man something for Valentine's Day is a great way to affirm him. It doesn't take much, just something small, like a new 50" high-def tv, a BluRay player, a dolby 7.2 surrond sound system, season tickets to the local NFL venue, a Ford Mustang, you know, something small like that.

We don't do anything that encourages the specific commercialism of the day so we don't do cards now and when we did it was usually a nice blank card with a personal message. We may go out for a meal sometime that week or buy each other something small but it won't have a Valentine's Day tag on it.

It's just another remember thing. I don't see harm in it, but as usual the world is over the top on it.

We usually go out for a meal and be extra nice. :)
