Now that the little Miami scrimmage game is over, let's get on with a discussion of February's major sporting event.

    Two thoughts:

    Danica Patrick
Yeah, I know, she won't actually be in the 500, but she ran a pretty good ARCA race and has decided to stick around for the Nationwide event. Consider this, 31 years ago, Kyle Petty WON the ARCA event--his first try at a superspeedway race. Danica finished 6th. Kyle wound up winning 19 races in his career (or was it 9?). Either way, Danica will never match his record. Although, I think she may have what it takes to one day win a NASCAR race. I thought she did a good job.

Judging by the Clash race, the Childress/Ganassi Chevies may have discovered something for the restrictor plate tracks to reclaim superiority over the Hendrick cars. Harvick and MacMurray ran very well while the Hendrick cars, except for Stewart, were no shows.

Of course, the qualifier races may cause my opinion to shift later this week.

I had pretty much come around to agree with your viewpoint about her. Then, she showed up and finished 6th in the ARCA race. I watched the last 25 laps of the race and while she made a rookie mistake in losing 5th, she could have wound up worse than 6th. She did better than I thought she would. Kyle finished his career with 8 wins, btw.

Perhaps there's a worthy competitor for HMS, but I'm putting no stock in anything that happened on Saturday night. I'm not so sure that the HMS plan was to not show their hand in any way in that race. I'm not considering choosing anybody for the 5 fantasy teams I have until after Thursday's races. Yes, I've got 5 fantasy team. Is that a problem?

    {wait a beat}

Anybody want me to join another league?

There was some talk that Nascar was going to do away with the out of bounds area, but I guess that was just talk. It will probably go the way of the "let em drive" attitude that Nascar wants us to think they're embracing. It's similar to the talk last year of letting the drivers show their emotions more, which lasted all of 2 days or so before Nascar showed that nothing had changed. Which is fine. Really. If Nascar wants the drivers to keep things in check, that's fine. Just don't try and fool us that things are different when they're not.

With the race 2 days away, who's your horse?

I have never correctly picked the winner of the Daytona 500 and I see no reason to start now. I'm going with Jimmie Johnson to win the race.

I just started a NASCAR fantasy league for the BB if anyone wants to join. All the info is on a thread I started about it.

Jimmie Johnson is a good pick. Harvick has looked strong. Tony Stewart is probably due, though I'd prefer that he wait until 2020 to win it--just so he'll be more humble.

    I'm rooting for a darkhorse--AJ Almendinger.

I'd like to see you all join the league (we need 4 more) so I can get a shiny gold virtual trophy when I win.

I hope we do get a few more. It takes only a few minutes a week to manage, and it makes watching a race a lot more fun.

Nationwide just finished. It was a pretty good race. I love now that they are really able to race.

As far as Sunday is concerned. I don't like him, but I think Kyle Bush will start a big come back.

Junior finished 29th on his roof. Just think what he can do using all four tires....

I don't have a favorite for the 500. If you are on the lead lap and running with the pack with 5 to go you have a legitimate chance to win. If I was a betting man, I'd put my money on either Kevin Harvick or Tony Stewart.

You don't have to bet on them you can join our fantasy league and start them.

Seriously you should sign up, it only takes a few minuets a week to do and makes watching the races more fun. We need a couple more people come and join us.

Jamie MacMurray wins his first points race for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing beating Junior to the finish line. Who'd thunk it?

    From thatsracin.com:

I was on my feet at the end, proving that, despite seriously considering adopting the "I don't care" stance about Junior after the 2009 abomination, he's still my boy. I had no inclination that Junior was going to do anything but get a Top 10 finish and there he was going 3-wide up the middle when going through the middle had been the kiss of death all day.

#1, I think Lance was right. Had there been 1 more lap, I think he would have won.

#2, Junior desperately needs his crew chief to build up his confidence after last year's abomination of a season. He needs his crew chief to not only talk about how good Junior is, but to also give him good cars. Nothing will get his confidence back quicker than running up front consistently.

If you saw the interview with Junior last night, you know he didn't come across as being happy about finishing 2nd, which I think is a very good thing.

Great!!! I know Tony rubs a lot of folks wrong as Dale Earnhardt did me. In my years of watching racing I've enjoyed answers by David Pearson (when you could get him to talk), Bobby Allison, A.J. Foyt, Curits Turner, the Flock brothers and Tony better than about anyone.

I had evening plans for Valentines Day, so, with all of the the delays, I did not get to stick around for the finish of the 500.

Allmendinger was on my fantasy team and I was sure disappointed when he wrecked that car. He had been shuffled WAY back and had come back up to sixth. I think the boy had a great car and knew it, but he got a little too excited and lost it.
