Do you have a pet peeve on how English is used, or being corrupted?

One of my pet peeves is the use of the word "myself" when the proper word is "me" or "I".

    Example:

{Incorrect } I bought myself and Sue an ice cream cone.

{Correct} I bought sue and me and ice cream cone.

Your "correct" sentence is not correct. Me thinks you need to work on proof reading before you start a thread on grammar (I spelled it correctly, you didn't in your title) and speaking.

(disclaimer: I don't claim to be a grammar or speaking expert...but of course I also didn't start a thread on it.)

 You are right. Well that is more a spelling mistake than one of grammar. However the incorrect sentence is still incorrect and the correct one is still correct.

The easiest test of whether to use I or me is to take the 2nd noun out of the sentence and test which word to use.

Thus a person would be wrong to say:

I bought I an ice cream cone.

    The correct grammar is:

I bought me an ice cream cone. [rather a poor sentence, but ok as an example]

Thus, "I bought Sue and me and ice cream cone" is correct.

Do you have any pet peeves?

    Cheers.

Yes-when people mistake common use for error.

    Hehe

My pet peeve is when people eat with their mouths open. I have chosen to end friendships because of this. I simply can't stand it and find it indicative of other problems, such as lack of respect for others and a selfish nature. The last lady I quit talking to had the nerve to do it at the same time she was talking to me on the phone. ew

Yeah, this reminds me of one of my pet peeves in which gabby people continuously are asking you questions when you’re hungry and trying to eat. They wait until right after you honk off about three bites and start chewing and then ask you a question while staring at you and insisting for an answer. Now, I think the only reason to open your mouth when you’re chewing is because your nose is stuffed and I tend chew my food “very” well…so… if the eyebrow-raise blinking sign doesn’t get the message across I have a cure for those gabby, inquisitive people...

But the above has nothing to do with the OP.

You misspelled grammar. Before you correct others, you should be absolutely sure that you are correct.

And this has absolutely nothing to do with the OP also. You have some reading comprehension problems.

It always bugs me when people say, "I could care less", when in fact they really mean "I couldn't care less".

Another one that doesn't really bug me, I actually have caught myself doing it sometimes, but is a common error is someone writing "your" instead of "you're"

That is an easy mistake to make ... though there is quite a difference in meaning. English has many traps like that. It is so easy when writing in a hurry to put in the wrong word, like pail for pale, etc.

I have several, but one that first comes to mind is the "Quote - unquote" The correct phrase should be "Quote - end quote"

BTW, what is the latest word on "ain't?"

    Salty

PS did you capitalize "Sue" in the OP under the "correct usage"
and when are you going to by me an ice cream cone?

I, like, have several, like pet peeves, but, like, one that really, like gets to me, you know, is when people, like, use the word "like" like, all the time, like, you know.

    It is still considered non-standard.

What is incorrect about using myself in that sentence?

    Advanced English Grammar
Perhaps you were thinking of the improper non-relexive use of myself, such as [*Dad bought Sue and myself ice cream cones]?

Pretty sure. The test, as I said in another entry is to remove the other noun or pronoun and see which fits, I or me.

Let's put it to the test:

I bought Sue and me an ice cream cone.

    Remove Sue and.....................

It would be incorrect to say:

I bought I an ice cream cone.

This sentence should be I bought me an ice cream cone. Not a pretty sentency, but it passes the test.

    Thus,

I bought Sue and I an ice cream cone is incorrect. Not many people would catch the mistake in a normal conversation however.
