Hello all. New guy first post. A friend and I was talking a while back about preachers and the question arose that I would like for you to help me with. If a man that use to drink do drugs curse adultry and devorced because of his adultry got remairied and then truely turn from it all and got saved could he become a preacher? My friend said he didn't think so but I disagree with him. God forgives us of all we have done in our past. It's usually man that does not forgive. The Lord could easily use a person like that. The remarrage thing is why my friend thinks not. I know the bible says husband of one wife but could this mean being married to more then one. I know Paul knew of the Greek and Roman beliefs of haveing multiple wives. Could this be what he meant? Sorry if this is not a clear question but I'm doing this on my i-phone and typeing is not very easy on it for me. Thank you all in advance.

Everyone is to apply Romans 10:14, "How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?" It is not just the pastor's job.

That verse refers to polygamists, no doubt. Christ died on the cross for your friend: if he is really saved, his past sins are no more. ABSOLUTELY he is eligible to become a pastor; as long as he is now a husband of only one wife, does not drink much wine, and has a good reputation now (by good reputation, I mean no one has anything REAL against him, in his present life).

The main thing to determine, is if God has actually CALLED him to it.

"his past sins are no more" sounds good but does nothing for consequences of sin so has no meaning in this case.

I must say that Liberty's answer is very poor. They give the traditional view and not the Biblical view which is obviously talking about polygamy.

Where does the Bible say God is still going to hold their past sins against them? Can you please show me that verse?

"Consequences" refer to natural results of sin; like you robbed a store, came to Christ, but still have to sit in jail. This is not a punishment God has given; he has promised that He will remember your sins no more.

What YOU are trying to do, is to only make forgiveness partial. It isn't. Forgiveness is total.

Again, nowhere does scripture prevent a divorced person from being a pastor.

We have one such man as a pastor at our church and I'm glad we didn't have those kinds of rules. It's been over 20 years since his sortid "past" and he became a believer just shortly after he left that lifestyle. He's been great counseling other people who are in that lifestyle and he and his wife have led a long and successful ministry in the recovery areas. I do believe "new creation" means just that. :)

Polygamy was not normally practiced in the Greco-Roman world. There was plenty of messin' around, and there were many divorced and remarried citizens of Rome--some uppper class people had marriages in double figures, but outright polygamy was not practiced in Roman Greece--it was, to a certain degree in the East, but not in Greece.
And, among the Jews at this time, polygamy was not practiced--that is why devout Jewish men were so interested in what was a permitted divorce, as according to Shammai or Hillel. That is the backdrop to Jesus' verbal battle with them in Mat 19.

""Where does the Bible say God is still going to hold their past sins against them? Can you please show me that verse?"

Did not say that, reading lessons might help you discern my content versus your invention

""Consequences" refer to natural results of sin; like you robbed a store, came to Christ, but still have to sit in jail."

    Uuuuuummmm, yep.

"This is not a punishment God has given;"

Let us see if you can show us where I said that. Sides if God sets up governments maybe it is but that is another thread.

"he has promised that He will remember your sins no more."

Nor yours but that is not the point of my comment was it?

"What YOU are trying to do, is to only make forgiveness partial. It isn't. Forgiveness is total."

I did not speak to forgiveness that I know of, could you point that out for us in my comment?

"Again, nowhere does scripture prevent a divorced person from being a pastor"

That is another discussion for another time, my comment was simply ""his past sins are no more" sounds good but does nothing for consequences of sin so has no meaning in this case.""

Me thinks you have proven my point when you state "Consequences" refer to natural results of sin; like you robbed a store, came to Christ, but still have to sit in jail."

Not at all. You are failing to make a distinction between actions of men, and actions of God. It is impossible for God to "remember their sins no more" yet prevent a man from the ministry due to those past sins. This is contradictory; my six year old can see this.
