Favorite NASCAR driver

Voted for other. My favorite wll always be Dale Sr! Of living racers it's a toss up between Tony Stewart and Jimmy Johnson.

 

David Pearson will always be number one in my eyes. I like good smart clean racing and he was great at it.

 

Same here. I have yet to find a driver that I root for as hard as I did for Dale Sr.

 

Richard Petty is my all-time favorite.

Among active drivers, more and more I am liking Denny Hamlin.

Also, I am a Mopar fan, but I don't like Penske's lineup of drivers: Busch, Kesolowski, and Hornish.

 

Bobby and Donnie Allison, hands down.

Donnie mentions my dad in his book, "As I Recall....". I can't say he was the greatest driver because, as they say, "you are what your record says you are", but I will say that a kinder and funnier man, you will never meet.

I always idolized Davey when I was a kid so, naturally, I followed him until he died.

Most NASCAR fans came to NASCAR after it got to be too much like wrestling so they've probably never heard of Red Farmer, but Red (although we always called him Mr. Farmer because we weren't allowed to call adults by their first name) was one of the greatest and should be on any list of greatest drivers. He was, on the surface, ornery, surly, and cantakerous. Come to think of it, he was pretty much like that under the surface, too, but he was a good guy and I loved him to death when I was a kid.

Also, for some reason that I can't remember now, I always really liked Phil Parsons.

I never liked Tim Richmond, but I'm pretty sure that if he were alive today, he'd be a legend.

I quit watching NASCAR around fifteen years ago and so I couldn't tell you who any of the drivers are now.

 

Since he put Kyle Bush into the wall last night, my new favorite might be Denny Hamlin. Anyone who puts KB into the wall deserves praise. :thumbsup:

On the tracks here in Fl., Al. and the south, I always believed Red was better than Donnie or Bobby, but in NASCAR it didn't work out that way. By the way wasn't Red in the helicopter with Davie when he crashed?

 

I kinda thought that was obvious since you put "Mike" Martin in as one choice. His name is "Mark" Martin, FWIW....LOL :laugh:

Yes, Red Farmer was in the helicopter with Davey, but he lived. If you believe Wikipedia, Neil Bonnett was the one who pulled Red from the wreckage.

 

That could be correct about Neil pulling Red out. So much was over shadowed by Davey's wife and the country singer, which slips my mind now. There was even billboards up on I 20 or it might have been the bypass or both, say it ain't so Joe. The singer was Joe something.

 

You didn't even put Jeff Gordon on the list, which is quite shocking.

Joe Diffie. There was a sign out in front of the Iceberg, a local diner frequented by the Alabama Gang and their crews and staff (and also where my cousin and I would turn in all of the empty Coke bottles we would find for the deposit) that said "Welcome to Hueytown: Home of Joe Diffie...Built by Davey Allison."

 

You are correct my friend, the singer was Joe Diffie. Most of us recall Davey but not to many of us recall Joe.

Off subject, I use to watch Red and the Allison's race in Pensacola, Savannah, Nashville and a few other place, they gave me a lot of enjoyment over the years. And if I recall correct I believe Bobby was good on the guitar as well.

 

I don't blame Diffie. A lot of people do, but I believe that's just because they were hurt over Davey's death. I liken it to Charlie Manuel's first year in Philly.

I don't know if you're aware of this, but Uncle Charlie was hated here. He actually got death threats. He was from the American League and spent much of his career in Japan, so nobody really knew anything about him, but they hated him. The Daily News ran unflattering pictures. The local sports talk station mocked everything from his accent to his weight to his medical problems.

Why? Why be so cruel toward somebody you don't even really know?

Well, it really had nothing to do with him. It had to do with the firing of Larry Bowa and the circumstances under which he was fired.

Manuel didn't do anything wrong. In fact, since then, he's proven that he was far and away not only the right man for the job, but the savior of an entire franchise.

But Larry Bowa was worshipped as a god by those who didn't want to let their nostalgia for the Phillies' glory days go and to accept Charlie Manuel would mean letting go of Bowa.

Same here. People knew that accepting that Liz had to move on with her life meant letting go of Davey.

It's cruel and it's irrational, but that's just the way people are sometimes.

Every Friday night, Bobby and/or Donnie (and sometimes their brother Ernie) would race at BIR.

Sometimes, Donnie would just show up and look for a ride.

I really don't remember that, but then there are a lot of things I don't remember.
