Crazy Money Earned

I may be in the minority, but I don't have a problem with pro salaries. It is simply a case of supply and demand.

Who am I to tell someone that they are making too much money?? And I surely don't want the government to do that.

Pro athletes generate a significant amount of revenue. I would rather they get the money than it going all to the owner of the team.

 

Wouldn't logic dictate that the owners also generate revenue if their employees do?

 

I could care less, what the players make. I don't buy tickets to pro games, I don't buy their jersey, I don't buy their shoes or drink beer. What they do and get paid does not effect me at all, they aren't taking any of my money to pay them.

In Jacksonville that was a different story, they raised taxes to pay for the redo of the Gator Bowl. Many still do not like that, it isn't bringing as much money into the city as they had believed. They were told it would be like Daytona's July race, it isn't even close. Folks who come to a race stay 3 days or more, to a ball game most come and leave in the same day.

 

The owner is exchangeable. Anyone with money could hire an athletic team. The players, however, have significant specialized talents that, at the highest level, are not easily exchangeable.

I have no problem with the owners making a profit, but I don't want to act like the problem is player salaries. If the players didn't make the money, it would all go to the owner. The talent deserves compensation.

 

Never happen! It'll take more than a conversation about salaries to unite Yankee fans with that other team from Boston.....:tongue3:

 

Hardly. All pro owners have money. But not all win. No one is saying "let the owners get it all." But no one should say "it's all the players' doing and let the owners fend for themselves"

 

I'm not saying that the owners don't play a role; I'm saying that the athletes are the sine qua non of professional athletics.

Owners can make poor staffing decisions, and they may not be able to assemble the best coaching staff or players. I'm not denying this fact.

 

Personally I don't begrudge anyone's earnings. If however I were to choose the most overpaid profession it would be actors more so than athletes. When an actor can work a few months on a movie set and get paid twenty million dollars, all the while being pampered beyond imagination it is hard to complain about an athlete. The modern athlete has to work out year around to stay in shape. Physical pounding and pain is a way of life for the professional athlete. He is required to live months on the road and away from family. He risks serious permanent injury, and many athletes often end up living out their lives with debilitating injuries.
