Musical preaching

I find it distracting, but to each his or her own.

 

Absolute silence!!

There is enough of that trash on the telly shows. So much background noise one can't hear the actors mumble.

I want to hear what the preacher is saying! I have no interest in back ground music to "enhance" his/her sermon. Also, as I have nerve damage in my right auditory nerve such sounds bring physical pain ... I sit as far from the piano as I can get ... and such music would cause me physical pain in my right ear.

 

I think it would be distracting.

 

If the preacher needs some sound effects what does that say about his preaching and its content? People will listen to someone who has something to say.

 

This is not uncommon in African-American churches. The organist will play a chord to enhance what we might call an "applause line," or one which might draw an Amen. It's sorta the organ version of a rim shot. Ba-da Boom!

 

no but I do hear talking and some sighs sometimes...but that is another story

 

Yes, that's a pet peeve of mine. I once had someone do that when I was praying in a church in Minnesota and I nearly stopped prayer to tell the organist to stop. I decided that that response would be more disruptive than simply wrapping up the prayer quickly, so I did that instead.

I've heard it done before. Reminds me of a baseball game.

Why not do the wave and yell at the pastor if he strikes out with his sermon?

 

Went to hear John R Rice, unfortunately Jack Hyles preceeded him and I left before I threw up so missed Rice.

Hyles closed and started to pray, he stopped and chewed out the pianist ending with "I don't need music while I pray!"

The next morning my wife happened to listen to Hyles on the radio and you guessed it, piano music while he prayed. :BangHead:
