I have a kid who we are trying to steer in the college direction---but, at his age, he's not a big fan of the strict rules of the Baptist colleges we have mentioned.

We have explained to him the reasons for such rules, and, while he understands them, he would prefer a place where he could be himself and where baggy jeans, funny looking t-shirts, and fluffy hair.

Do you know any good Christian colleges that would allow this kind of dress?

And any other advice (not debate, please)?

I'm not sure of the rules but kids at our church are right now going to:

    Liberty University
    Cedarville
    Columbia International

    Maybe look into their rules.

I must plug my alma mater, Williams Baptist College (www.wbcoll.edu).

It's a small Southern Baptist college in rural Arkansas, but it's a steal in terms of tuition, and the small class sizes really made a difference in my undergraduate education.

For my intermediate Greek class, we had five students, so we often would go to the student lounge and have class with a round of Starbucks coffee.

You can't get things like this at a larger college.

It would look totally different. They have really upgraded the campus in the last decade.

All of these have been built in the past 10 years: administration building, bookstore/post office, honors dorms, student center, chapel.

Definitely check into Cedarville. I've heard nothing but positives from there. Some children of members of my independent baptist church (when I lived in that state) attended there and word is the place if very doctrinally sound and offers a great education.

    Thanks, y'all.

We were sort of pushing PCC because a friend's kids went there and they really work with MKs. However, it's just not his style. Instead of pushing him into something he may not stick with, I'd rather he find a better fit. KWIM?

I'll look into these schools. Thanks again :)

Sweet mercy. You can do what you like, but I wouldn't send my poodle dog to PCC. the quality of education is laughable and many undergraduate and graduate schools, along with many potential employers, will not accept credits from PCC.

Not to mention they are one of the most recognizably and overtly Pharisaical bastions of pseudo-Christian education available. I knew a guy who was, with friends, nearly expelled for having Thanksgiving dinner at an elderly couple's home in a coed group. These were college students, legal adults, who were invited by a hospitable couple because they were not able to be with family over the holiday.

There was another friend of mine (I was homeschooled, so I know many who made the mistake of attending there [and almost ALL will admit to it being a mistake]), who was expelled because his roommate hid a listerine bottle half-full with vodka in my friend's closet. There was no warning, no discussion, no fair hearing, just expulsion.

God, forgive those who do these things in your name.

Please, please, please, look at Wheaton, Fuller, Regent (in BC, not Pat Robertson's place), Baylor, even Moody or Liberty or a host of other fine schools in the evangelical tradition, but do not consider PCC.

Here's a list of good Christian colleges along with their web sites, which should give you an idea of who they are and where they stand on certain issues --

    Wheaton (Wheaton, IL) -- www.wheaton.edu
Palm Beach Atlantic (West Palm Beach, FL) -- www.pba.edu
Covenant College (Lookout Mountain, GA) -- www.covenant.edu
Liberty University (Lynchburg, VA) -- www.liberty.edu
Taylor University (Upland, IN) -- www.taylor.edu

Another good place to search is www.collegeboard.com where you and he can search universities by location, religious affiliation and the like.

    Godspeed in your search.

What is the story with Baylor? Are you familiar with them? I know that they are the "largest Baptist university" but can you provide some input on them?

Note -- if you are more comfortable, you can pm with the info as well.

    Thanks.

My undergrad is from Baylor. It is a fine school with first rate academics. They have been shifting to a more evangelical stance over the past few years. Those who are extremely conservative will probably find bones to pick with them, but if you are firmly grounded in your faith and open to dialogue with those who differ on non-essentials, it can be a very wonderful place to study.

Pensacola Christian College. It's a highly legalistic institution that focuses on controlling students' behavior instead of effecting real heart change.

Thanks Jaigner. There are so many schools with the same initials, I couldn't equate them.

Sounds like the school that kicked Billy Graham out for walking down street holding hands with his future wife. I think that was Bob Jones University.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I think you're right, but PCC is worse than Bob Jones, for a number of reasons. Not the least of which is the fact they are not accredited and, therefore, are detrimental for a lot of people who were duped into going there.
