I'm in need of 10-15 hymnals for my prison ministry. If anyone has some hymnals lying around collecting dust that they wouldn't mind donating or selling cheaply, please send me a PM. Thanks.

I've got to get permission but we basically use our hymnals as blocks at this point because of our projection system. We have a ton.

But hubby said we should be able to do it with no problem. Ours is "Praise! Our Songs and Hymns" 1979 by Singspiration.

PM me your address and we can get them out to you by Wednesday.

    Ann

Why is it heartbreaking? We no longer use hymnals but we certainly use hymns. No need to worry about us.

What IS heartbreaking is to have probably close to a thousand hymnals just sitting in our storage room and I'd LOVE to see them go to someone who can use them.

I guess passing on hymnals to those who could use them is heartbreaking. Go figure.

It's heartbreaking that hymnals have fallen out of use in so many places. There is a permanence that goes along with hymnals, which cannot be replicated by using a screen, no matter how old the songs are. Also, it removes a very tangible connection to the tradition of our faith.

My point is not to be harsh toward anyone, and I would certainly want hymnals to be used, but it does grieve me very deeply that hymnal use has declined so much.

Proverbs 15:22 says, "Tradition is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him."

Oh wait, that's foolishness, not tradition. My bad!

My guess is that most of the songs, while some being contemporary favorites, are mostly older than the 70s.

And we can comfortably do those older songs with the projector AND free people to raise their hands if they wish. I can also make the words large enough for 99% of the congregation of 600 to see whereas many cannot read the hymnals at all even with glasses.

Honestly, I've found that the screen has so many more benefits than the hymnal.

I quit using hymnals long before powerpoint. I knew the songs and couldn't read the music.

Tradition - the living faith of dead men that has been passed down through generations.

Traditionalism - the dead faith of living men that says, "We've never done it that way before"

Let's not confuse these 2. Whether a solid, Bible-believing church uses hymnals or not is completely irrelevant. As far as whether we should be concerned about Ann's church using hymnals, I'm certainly not. Over the years, I've seen the testimony of Ann through her posts and I have 0 concerns about the kind of church she and her husband serve at.
