They may not know they can.

I see this a lot with forwarded emails too - the ones in business that we do need to see

ALL those emails are left in. Sometimes there are not so many, but sometimes there are 100s. Take them out before you hit forward!!

 

Lot's of forums use the edit feature. Many persons use the quotes, no matter how long, so they are in fact responding to an unedited post in it's original context, just in case it is edited afterward, and the point they make is thus moot due to this edit.

 

Then perhaps before making a comment, the person should go back and read the entire contribution and get the context of what is being discussed.

We see this in biblical studies too, where people quote a text, and simply ignore other relative passages, that may shed light on the quoted verse or verses.

I'll tell you why: because the quote button at the bottom of each post quotes the entire post!

The rest is either laziness or lack of computer skills (some folk may not realize that they can edit out the "extras")

 

That bugs me too. Take it out unless the whole thing is needed.

On the rare occasions when I do, it is because I don't trust the person not to go mess with the post and then say they didn't say something. In fact, there have been forums where I quote them ONLY to preserve what they said so the stupidity will live on and they'll not be able to unclaim it. LOL I is a little mean like that sometimes, but only with people who deserve it so maybe it's just doing the world a favor. :-D

 

90% of the time, I edit the posted quote.

There are rare occasions I don't, due to time constraints or (gasp) laziness. I try to remember to go in and re-do it later. Sometimes I do...sometimes, not.

But I seriously try--and seldom, if ever--quote a dissertation without some serious edit. My posts can be almost terminal in their ennui-factor. No sense in compounding it.

My two cents, since we are venting. :laugh:

What bothers me more is when a person edits the quote but also edits out who they are quoting. Often times that makes it much more difficult to read long threads after the fact and figure out who is saying what.

 

Good question, I've wondered that myself.

 

By quoting someone and editing the quote, one can change the meaning of the what was said.

 

That a very good point. I usually prefer to be quoted in entirety.

Also, and of course there are exceptions, but most post are usually of reasonable length and not a big deal to just quote entirely. It actually helps for those that are reading a thread later if it is done so.

 

What's really ridiculous is auto-quoting a post just to pepper it with numerous inserted "sics".

 

I feel the same in regards to very very long postings, oh brother....I am not interested in reading a thesis. Posts should be no more than about 4 sentences long in my humble opinion.....:thumbs:

 

I just don't trouble with overly lengthy posts, period. KISS, always.
