If a member of your church came to you and asked, "Do you think it would be okay for me to take belly dancing classes"

    and your answer would be?

(answer even if you are not a pastor)

I would ask her what is the purpose, what is the make-up of the class and if her husband approved.

If the answer to #2 is all women, I'd be more agreeable to it.

If she is doing this in order to get a job doing belly dancing, I'd suggest that she find a more modest job. If she's doing it for the health benefit or for her husband, I think that would be fine - IF the class was all women. Surprisingly enough, there just might be men there as well and I would not agree to that.

Of course if her husband didn't approve, it didn't matter WHAT the rest of the answers were. :)

    I like that answer...

For her husband in a women's only class, sure. Like I tell my kiddos and other people, "Its okay, we're married."

To be overtly sexual to anyone other than one's husband is sin.

I like Ann's answer but I would wonder why a women (except my wife) would be asking me. If it were a man asking, well I don't even want to think what I would be wondering.:tongue3:

It could be that she's getting a mature believer's opinion. ;)

    As for a man - yeah, I know. It's a scary thought.

A Baptist seminary president addresses this dangerous trend:

    Come on man.

    Unreal.

OK. I would have told her, "great, and your first church performance will be when?"

Do all things to the glory of God.

Yes, and I included your quote.

Actually, belly dancing is a very good form of exercise (from what I've read) and if she does it amongst other women at the studio and in her own home, I don't see an issue. Now, if she was looking to do it in public, I'd suggest she run instead. LOL

If it were a women's only class I would ask her if my wife could sign up too!

    I couldn't stomach such a question.

Of course, if my response were too harsh, she might hate my guts.

tough subject here. I need to take a while and digest these thoughts.

I have no clue why a woman would have to ask a member of her church for permission to do that. Belly-dancing classes are exercise classes for women - for the most part. If a woman asked me that, I would ask her if she felt the need to get my permission for her to blow her nose, too.

    Sheesh!

Of course it's okay. What's the big deal? She doesn't need anyone's permission to do this. It's an issue of conscience. HER conscience. If married, she should probably talk about it with her husband first, but it's her decision to make.

If someone at church asked me, I'd probably say, "Why are you asking me?"

Could be she is looking for a different perspective. Maybe she is a new Christian and wants to be walking the right path. Maybe she is a mature Christian and just wants to make sure she will not be a hindrance to a new or non-Christian.

Off in the distance, I hear wood, nails, and other supplies being gathered.

Now just look what you've done... :D

and now for the rest of the story.....

The other day, Mrs Salty and I were looking at the Town parks & Rec booklet. There as a blurp about belly dancing - she jokingly said "I wonder what the folks on BB would say" So I posted the question - no one ever came to me. I do not know anyone who is a belly dancer...

Actually, there were some very interesting answers. So now if anyone does ever ask you, just refer them to BB:type:

See, I guess in my experiences at church, there are oftentimes that someone will come asking my opinion or another's opinion. There are just some people who need more guidance than others and if someone came to me with this question, I'd just answer them as I did - with hopefully some wisdom and teaching how to use Biblical principles to guide our decisions. :)

I wonder: Would the world's best belly dancers graduate from the Navel Academy?

(Please realize that writing the aforementioned joke took lots of guts.)
