Please specify what kind of hat? beanie, baseball cap, beret, derby, cowboy hat, hard hat, turban, sombrero, top hat, dunce cap........

 

I suppose it can be. In my area ranchers typically do not unless it is for supper or the sanctuary.

 

My husband will not wear any kind of hat indoors. Unfortunately, many men do wear their hats and even ball caps indoors, even in restaurants while eating.

 

I'm guilty of wearing hats indoors at times.

 

I think it is a cultural thing. We always removed our hats (any hat) when entering a building, and we doffed our hat before a funeral procession. Women wore a head covering indoors and out. Things change over time though and generations differ.

It doesn't trouble me any except during a National Anthem and funerals.

It is SO funny you brought this up!

In every state except my current one, I rarely saw a man wear a hat indoors and the general understanding was "rude!"

Now I'm in Oklahoma City and I see hats indoors all the time. Actually I see a lot of rudeness, but while discussing it with someone (yeah, really!) we got into the technicalities of OKC and that there's a high poverty level, so what often appears to be rudeness may be more of people being more focused on survival and not really giving a hoot about stuff like that because in the big scheme of things, it doesn't put dinner on the table.

It seems that this hat thing and other issues of propriety/politeness is observed in more detail in cities with higher general incomes.

So whether it is rude or not can't really be answered by anyone except those who live near you.

I'll always find it rude, but won't hold it against someone.

Kinda funny that in schools I teach in the kids aren't allowed to wear hats, but the reason is not a matter of polite vs rude. It's because they might hide contraband in the hats. Is that not ridiculous? I almost fell on the floor laughing when that rule started! :laugh:

 

A teen girl was watching her mother one Sunday afternoon prepare to cook a ham. Just before she put it in the oven she cut the ends off of the ham. Out of curiosity the girl asked her mother why she cut the ends of the ham off. After thinking for a brief moment the mother said "You know, I have no idea. That is just how my mother taught me. so the mother later called Grandmother and asked the same question. the Grand mother said "Because my pan was always to small for the ham."

 

Im bald so I wear my wool cap & sometimes a hood because Im cold. In the summer, Id wear a baseball cap driving to work to keep the sun out of my eyes or when working outside to keep the sun from burning my head. Other than that, Im Kojak & who loves ya baby!

 

Concerning wearing a hat indoors I agree with Jim, it is cultural. I cannot at the moment remember a culture where the wearing of a hat indoors by a man is the norm. I believe Old Order Mennonite women wear a head covering both indoors and outside.

I wear a hat outside in the summer to protect my skin from the sun. Several years ago I had some pre-cancerous cells removed from my forehead.

On a side note, I do not like seeing young American men wearing a baseball hat backwards ... especially here in Europe. To me it looks silly. But more importantly it marks them as American ... and since our invasion of Iraq that can be dangerous in some parts of the world.

 

It depends on the indoor facility.

An informal restaurant? Hat is OK.
Going to a basketball game? Hat is OK.
Church? No.
Grocery shopping? OK
Nice restaurant? No.
Birthday party? Probably not.

 

Yes. I teach my sons that you don't wear a hat inside.
