Look around you, most governments seem to enact laws and things because of human stupidity. Human stupidity knows no gender, race or nationality!!!

The question is, did Providence provide stupidity to protect people from evil?

Your answer seems to imply that stupidity causes evil? [Not arguing, just talking.]

I can't seem to find the quote but Thoreau wrote something like that in "Waldon Pond"
The gist of the quote was long the lines of 'ignorance is bliss'.

There is a vast difference between stupidity and the inability to learn. Some people are ignorant in knowledge capacity, but exceed many minds of so-called intellectualism.

For every law that is created, you will live long enough to regret.

    Cheers,

    Jim

There is a difference between stupid and ignorant.

Stupid means, does not know and cannot learn.

Ignorant means does not know, but can learn.

The line I quoted in the OP I found interesting ... I am inclined to disagree with it ... but it is interesting.

Reminds me of the old joke about the preacher who was preaching a sermon on ignorance and apathy. Two ol boys in the back of the church were sitting together, and one asked the other what the preacher was talking about, his reply "I don't know, and I don't care".

In some cases yes it does, in others it causes evil indirectly...where others manipulate the stupidity for their own ends. An example would be in the case of say where the mob are screaming for the release of Barrabas.

I feel it is true. The people throughout history that stand out for their horrific crimes have either been smarter than average or they were working under the direction of a person considered highly intelligent.

Stupidity as protection? I certainly believe it. There are some subject matters I cannot grasp...meaning I consider myself stupid in those areas because no matter how hard I try, it doesn't happen for me. Therefore, there are some ways I can be taken advantage of by others, but you know what? I usually don't know it. On occasion when I find out, then I am miserable and feel horrible. There are times that something has happened and I didn't figure it out until WAY later and it was better because if I'd figured it out earlier, I may have retaliated in the moment or been in mental anguish.

Why do you think the "I don't know" defense is still used so often? There's protection in stupidity.

I've lived in places where no name bullets whiz by and people aren't running for the exercise. I watched teens intentionally play stupid because their peers might not have let them get away with being smart. They'd either become prey because they were different or prey for those needing someone to come up with ways to get away with illegal stuff.

So in a sense there's safety in stupidity and danger in being smart.
It works the other way too, but the safety/stupidity and danger/intelligence are the ones that stand out in my mind from observing this world.

That's my personal opinion. I wish more people would participate and use more words!

Thanks for putting the quote up. We needed a fresh topic!

Stupid is as stupid does. There have been moments I have been protected because I entered a "duh" moment.

And there are many things that you grasp very easy, that I would have trouble with.

But you are aware of your shortcomings - and realize you can be taken advantage of - but that second part is a strength you have - utilize it to the fullest.

I am very similar to you in situations like that.

    Quick story
Went to buy a new car -found one I liked (in 1978) told salesman I would come back next day with decision -wanted $50 non-refundable down payment - I said no / if no D/p cannot hold this vehicle - Me - "so be it" came back next day. Decided to buy car - was told they had to change trunks lids because someone else bought a new car w/ a trunk lid luggage rack and did not want it, so my price would be an additional $300. I said no - he talks to manager - we will give it to you at cost for $100 - I said no! his answer "but you said you are moving to Texas, you need lots of space for luggage" me - "but yesterday, you told me the trunk was big enough. Would you believe they found me a trunk lid with out a luggage rack?"
BTW - total cost of that new '78 Ford Fairmont was $4,000 (no a/c or radio :( )

As I look back, my only regret is that I did not demand a sightly lower price from the original agreed to price since he had lied to me.

Bottom line, the only reason I stood up to him was because my dad was with me. Without him, I may very well have fallen into his sales trap.
I always try to remember that incident especially whenever I make a large purchase.

So Gina, just take your time and think before you make a big decision. That is the only defense I have
