Here's a very astute analysis of what the Hall of Fame should look like:

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/blog/archives/10350

    No Concepcion.
    No T. Perez, either.

    Trammell and Whitaker in.

Oh, and lookie who else is in: Bill Freehan. Yes!

    The numbers don't lie!

    :tongue3:

And the two Evans' are in - Dwight and Darrell. Sweet justice!

We've been through this before. See previous thread. But I appreciate the attempt.....if for no other reason to get talking again, and to give me something else to think about rather than losing the best basketball coach since my early childhood on The Hill.

Along with Buddy Bell, Bret Saberhagen, Kevin Brown, Rick Reuschel, Ted Simmons (whom you have ardently opposed in the past), Jerry Koosman, Graig Nettles (see Ted Simmons), Ron Cey, and a host of other marginals at best.

Thank God no one is using this as their sole criterion. A lot of HOFers aren't on the list. Interesting that Dale Murphy, Ted Simmons, and some others made this list when they are roundly criticized as being marginal.

The author's intent was to put in the exact number of players in this "new Hall" as there are in the real Hall. If you read the comments, he points out that the current Hall is "too big" indicated by all these marginal players like Reuschel, Cey and Bell. I saw the list sorted by WAR, and Tramm/Whit were both up on the list, so even if you eliminated the bottom 25% they would still be in. Freehan, admittedly, was near the bottom of the list, so he is definitely marginal.

What you need to grapple with is: Why can't Davey and Doggie even make this list - not even on the margins? Tells you something, doesn't it?

So they didn't make the list. Neither did some very big names. Some very small names did. This list is inconsequential even if interesting.

You cannot reduce the HOF to a formula of arbitrary statistical minimums. This is SABR's biggest weakness. It plays right into the ESPN mentality. It's killing baseball.

And you said it was an astute list of who should be in. Now you say it's hypothetical and not to be taken seriously. Which is it?

Good luck to the Buckeyes tonight.

    Like who?

Depends on if you think the current Hall is too big or not. I tend to think it's too big, so admittedly the bottom 10% or so of players on this list are marginal.

    LOL!

    Agree with you.

Gene Tenace? Luis Tiant? Frank Tanana? C'mon! Gene Tenace was a career .241 hitter. Tanana had a lifetime ERA of 3.66. This is the Hall of FAME, not the Hall of Players who were Better than their Peers at a Particular Position during a Particular Era.

Which is why the current Hall is probably too big.

Re: Tenace - look closer at his stats. BA does not tell all. Consider his OBP, power, defense and era he played in, and you'll find that he added much value to his teams.

Yeah, he had a very good OPS for his position--when he played catcher. First base? Not so much.
