Recently legislation was passed allowing military veterans to utilize the military salute.

I would encourage all vets to do so at the appropriate time, ie Flag passes by, Pledging the Flag, Star Spangled Banner, ect

In addition, I would like to the the President of the US salute military style, providing he is a Vet- what are your thoughts about that?

In Canada, only military people salute, and they must be wearing a cap with the badge on it. In a group, the senior military person salutes.

The only change we have had over the years is the adoption of the American style of salute rather than our open-hand salute, long way up; short way down.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I can't believe we need anyone's permission to salute the flag.

The law is about utilizing the military hand salute. I encourage all citizens to "salute" by putting their hand over the heart.

I was reading one fourm where a Marine Corps Sgt will not render the Military hand salute when in Civies - I forgot his reasoning, but, well you know about the Marine Corps

It can also be used to arrest someone on a technicality, when you don't have proof of the actual crime that has been committed.

Of Course, Bill never did that - did he?

Not since flag burning was declared to be protected speech by the Supreme Court.

    No, he did not.

Different branches of the US Military have different rules for when a salute is proper. When in uniform and under cover (wearing a uniform hat) is the same for all 4 US branches. But the Army also considers it proper to salute when not under cover except when indoors but there is an exception to that when reporting to a superior officer or during an indoor ceremony.

After discharge/retirement and/or while not in uniform, the hand salute was not considered proper military courtesy until 2007 when Veterans were told it was now proper for them to render the hand salute to the flag even when not in uniform or not under cover.

Did that make it any clearer? :)
