Where I live about 10% of the people have never heard of the NBA, and probably half the population or more didn't even know that the playoffs were going on. The only reason some of them care about baseball is that there is a Canadian team playing and even then they lose most of the time.

By what is posted here, it seems that most Americans don't have much interest in the NHL, our national sport. But it is odd that out of 30 teams that play in the league 25 of them are American, and only five remain in Canada. Right now we are in the quarter finals. There is only one Canadian team left, the Vancouver Canucks. If they win tonight (beating Nashville) they will advance to the semifinals.

Hockey is so important in Canada that it takes precedence over politics:
    http://teachkidsnews.com/2011/04/11/leaders-to-speak-to-canadians/

We had an election on May 2. The Conservatives formed a majority government which is good for this nation. But before that, there was a leader's debate scheduled to take place. The date was changed due to the hockey game between Montreal and Boston. Everyone would have been watching the hockey game, and no one paying attention to the politicians.

Its our sport (Canada's). But ironically most of the teams stem from America. And even in though the playoffs are on, there doesn't seem to be much interest in them. I don't know about you, but I find that odd.

I used to like hockey until the Phantoms left. I played basketball in high school but I don't follow it now.

The NBA is just a bunch of thugs and gang members.

Really? Can you list any NBA players or even former NBA players that are gang members? I've never heard of any, but I guess you may know of them.

I know many Canadians. You're selling them short as sports fans.

Truthfully, I've been wanting to post for some time about the NHL, which I love more than the NBA, and I'm not alone (but due to familiy issues I've been quite busy along with finishing my dissertation). Here in Knoxville, half the sports fans don't know that the Grizzlies are in the playoffs (hyperbole). However, people who don't know icing from an Icee know what Nashville has done, which is make us proud. Rinne has shown he is a first rate goalie on the rise. There have been times you could've slapped a Luongo jersey on him and no one would've known the difference. Joel Ward is a star in the making. Geoffrion will get there. Legwand still has it. Suter could've played better, but can't fault him especially after the atrocious calls in game 3.

Kesler and Luongo beat the Preds. Kesler was just a Pred killer. Nashville couldn't get shots on the net. This team did not have a star like in years past, but they played cohesive hockey. What's especially notable is this is a Nashville team that the fans rose up to defend against a corporate raider who tried to steal our team, and for once, the fans won. So we Preds fans are winners. We love our boys.

Good luck to the Canucks. I can't stand Detroit, our rival, for obvious reasons. The Sharks eliminated my boys a couple of times, so I have reason not to cheer for them.

    The one difference is this:

The NBA has a larger following because thousands of NBA fans are biological children of the players... :eek :D :D

Tonight Detroit forced their series with San Jose to a seventh game which will be played on Thursday. The series between Vancouver and Nashville was good one. At least the Canucks will have a chance to rest before the semi-finals which will start on Sunday.

You gotta like a country that puts sports above politics.

If you want to get people to like hockey, you gotta get them to go to an NHL game. It is the best sport to watch in person of any sport!

    GO LIGHTNING!

I was an avid NHL fan in my youth (Minnesota North Stars.) When the team moved to Dallas it kind of killed my interest. Sure they've got a team now but the Minnesota Wild isn't a very good franchise. Nice arena, bad franchise.

If Minnesota ever gets an NBA team I might follow the NBA again.

I am amazed at how the NHL has rebounded since they "forfeited" one whole season, and this when it was at its highest peak!! They had games on ESPN, NBC, ABC, and a few other channels, if I remember correctly. Now they are on the local Foxsportsnet/Dallas/NY/Cinn/Ohio/Midwest, etc. They are also on the VS. channel, and they seem to be doing quite well now....I thought it would take YEARS for the NHL to recover, but thankfully they did this relatively quick.

Now, my team, the Edmonton Oilers, since they lost game seven to the Carolina Panthers, have been "bottom feeding" since then. But hey, with all the early first round picks, they can rebuild quickly. I really like Hall, so who knows, maybe in another twenty years, they can hoist Lord Stanley's Cup!!

I find the NBA games exceedingly boring. I do like college basketball, especially the NCAA playoffs. As far as I am concerned the NBA could disappear forever.

I gave up on pro baseball years ago after the strike. Too much greed.

I am seriously considering giving up the NFL for the same reason, too much greed. I do like college football very much.

I enjoy Olympic hockey but never watch the NHL.

I remember the old joke ... a fellow went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.

Yep. They lolly gag around walking up and down the court, rarely playing defense. Finally, in close games they start to play with about 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately the final minutes of play are chopped up with countless timeouts, fouls, and what-not. Unwatchable.

Playoff games a somewhat more entertaining but since half the teams make the playoffs and I don't follow the regular season, I say forget the whole thing.

I also like the college game much better. The players run and play defense and there isn't as much showboating.

I can sympathize with you but realize that wherever there is a big pot of money, there will be many hands trying to grab into it. No one is forcing owners to pay ballplayers $25 million a year; they are doing it because there is so much money involved.
