This thread is primarily to only be answered by subjects of the British Empire (I trust I have used the correct terms - if not please inform me of the proper terms)

Queen Elizabeth has been on the throne for some 60 years. Currently Prince Charles is the Heir-apparent to become King. Prince William of course is the second in line.

So I have a couple of questions for British Empire subjects:

    1. What is the general feeling of Prince Charles becoming King
    2. What is the general feeling of Prince Charles not accepting the throne and passing it directly to his son Prince William.
    3. Under British law, if Charles did not accept the throne, would it than go to Elizabeth's second son(Charles brother) ?
    4. If # 3 is correct - could Charles be King for one day - than pass it on to his son?
    5. What is the general feeling of the BE about retaining the monarchy.
    6. What is the general feeling of BE independent nations retaining the UK monarch as it King (or Queen)?

Anything else that us Yankees might be interested in knowing?

Thank you in advance for your input

When Elizabeth either dies or abdicates, Charles is the immediate heir to the throne, then comes the formalities. And so, William is the immediate heir to the throne.

Royalty plays a vital role in the UK. You might be amazed at the monies brought into England alone because of royalty.

Charles plays a vital role despite all the earlier nonsense that some people and the press have promilgated. He helped to rebuild East London and played a vital role in helping the farmers in Wales when disaster hit...using his own money.

The Empire has mixed feelings, and this worsens as more "foreigners" take over those countries.

When Charles becomes king, a lot of people will be surprised at his civility and dignified approach on the throne. He was forced into a bad marriage at the outset, and this led to bad press. Where do you think Diana got her money from??? She was messing about from the beginning, and her untimely death made her a hero. Sorry, I don't buy her at all.

This royal family have been very public from the beginning, and reached out to common people going back to the war years when they walked through the bombed out areas of London. It was the queen "mum" who broke ranks from their security and shook hands with the public and talked to them.

Hope this gives one Brit's opinion on the questions. And yes, I am still a citizen of the UK.

    Cheers,

    Jim

To anyone from other countries, we all in the USA are "Yankees"

I read that on VE-Day 16 year old Elizabeth walked the streets of London incognito to mix with the commoners.
Yes, I do appreciate your comments, thank you
any other British Empire subjects - would love to hear from you also

I actually feel sorry for poor old Charlie...in the good old days he probably would have slipped mama poison to gain the throne.

I think it would be a wasted effort for him to ascend the throne on his mother's demise....she could live to be over 100 as her mama, so I think he would be okay for his son tobe the next crowned person.

Personally, I think the monarchy is subjected to the worst form of media, and as Jim says it is an important part of British tourism, and it retains for many Brits a sense of whom they are. The royal family in general is very aware of its rights and more importantly of its obligations. Christchurch recently had a visit from Prince William and was very pleased he did so, this is on top of the run of the mill politicians and prime ministers.

I am quite happy to have a constitutional monarch to be the head of New Zealand. The way America elects presidents does not appeal in any way, shape or form.:wavey:
