With the announcement that HP is discontinuing their presence in the desktop, laptop, and even phone markets, one has to ask: What are they going to do?

The answer, as I heard it today, is that they're going to focus on "enterprise"; meaning, they're going full-on into servers and providing "cloud" services.

I'm still researching the full implications of this, but it shifts a focus from desktop PCs and even laptops, to mobile computing devices. HP may someday in the future get back into hardware; in fact, I personally think they're making a mistake by putting all their eggs into one basket; but for now, they're focusing on the services that your mobile device requires. The conclusion being, how to focus on using your smartphone, tablet, etc. as your business/personal computing device.

This means that, for the U.S., only Apple and Dell are providing hardware. All other PCs are non-U.S. companies.

This is a huge departure from the existing paradigm, and actually reminds me of the science fiction shows like "Star Trek" and "Earth: Final Conflict" (sorry about the geek factor there!). It's a tendency towards the mobile person, rather than "chained" to a desk. I'm still mulling over the implications of that thought.

In the meantime, our business paradigms still revolve around the executive, the cubicle worker, etc. being at their desk, at their appointed time, working on their stationary, fixed machine.

But the new paradigm that HP is presenting, is almost perfect for the military: small mobile devices with the same level of connectivity and capability, but able to be used anywhere, any time.

Am I just being uber-geeky? Or does anyone else have thoughts/comments about this?

They are still retaining their printer business right?

I have been told that Lenovo did a similar move awhile back. I know the spinoff of Lenovo computers hasn't worked so well. I have two of them and regret both.

Mobile person - already beginning. Wife works for the state and they have a lot of people working at home and out in the field.

Personal desk computers have been on the way out for awhile now, laptops are coming in. My next rig will be a laptop or maybe even a better of the netbooks. I'd make the move now but present equipment is much too new.

Microsoft is presently offering looks at their cloud Office.

Soon we can go to work in our jammies :)

I asked the same question; didn't get a clear answer on that one.
