Generational curses

In the OT the Lord warns that under certain circumstance He would curse several generation because of what a prior one had done. Do you believe this still takes place today or was this only for Israel? Also if it still takes place is there a way to break the curse?

Ex 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me;

Here are some more if you would like to look them up.
EX. 34:7, Num. 14:18, DEU. 5:9,

I believe generational curses still take place and a lot of people are oppressed by such curses.
The only way to come out / break this curse (or any other curse for that matter) is by being born again. Nothing a believer or non-believer can do to come out appart from Christ Jesus.
2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
I believe that this is the only way one can stay out of generational curses and any other covenants that were made by before.

Ex 20:5...EX. 34:7, Num. 14:18, DEU. 5:9,

I do believe in generational curses...but I also believe in generational blessings.

Notice the next verse in Exodus 5:10 but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commands.

That's a pretty awesome promise!

I read in a commentary that the generational curse refers to the individual household since usually 3 or 4 generations lived within the same house. Thus judgment fell on the whole house of the ones who rejected God's commands.

God is not unjust to punish me for the sins my grandfather committed, especially since I only saw him a handful of times in my life. And believe me, his sins were many.

have done MUCH research in this area, as being member of a former pentacostal Church, was exposed to this doctrine stance..

IF you go back into the original hebrew texts, and look just how the passages were laid out, the words used, and how put together...

instead of their being a "cursing" supernaturally by God directly upon people, it sets out to be more that IF a family is practicing evil deeds/sins, and IF those following agree to keep on doing them, than God will come against them due to their willfull disodeniece and sins...

BUT

IF in same situation, those following the eveil person chooses good, God will bless them...

HE is direct involved in punishing/rewarding bad/good behaviors, but NOT causing them to occur!

Even IF you held to their being a direct cursing by God, than the Cross of Christ disarm/destroyed the power of satan over them, are have been "broken free" in Christ!

The problem with that is the Hebrew word for generations does not mean within that one generation. it means those generations that follow like the child grows and has children and they have children and so on each being a generation.
Also you are not reading the passage correctly. It does not say the next generation gets punished for the previous generations sins. It is saying that because a generation hated God the next one will also (son like father, daughter like mother) and so on and He will visit each generation about their own sin for up to the third or forth generation which is what it can take to break the cycle.

So let me ask again. If this is still going on today is there any way of breaking the cycle earlier then 3 to 4 generations or was there any way to break this back then?

Hebrews 2:14-15!

What "broke it" back than was the person choosing to obey God, and start 'doing good", and NOT follow in the footsteps of their fathers!

Most of my ancestors were horse thiefs, I have to be careful not to drive by any horse farms.

Seriously though, I do think there is something to it to a degree.

Isn't that what I said? 3 or 4 generations lived in the same house, great grandfather, grandfather, father......

This sins of the head of the household will certainly affect the whole household.

God does not though directly curse you IF your parents were reprobates...

He does and will pronounce judgement upon you practicing their sins!

This is an interesting topic. I thought that saving faith would break the generational curses i.e. being passed down onto future generations if the Christian did not continue the same pattern of sin.

Will the generational curses be broken whether the Christian is aware of their family tree pattern of sin or not?

Sorry Amy I miss understood what you were saying. I thought you were limiting to several children within the same generation.

My Mum did her family tree back quite a few generations. On her father's side several ancestors were convicts from Mother England (early 19th century).
On that side there was a pattern of minor crime, alcoholism, poor education and depression. Yes sin definitely passes onto further generations.

Well no Christians continues in the same pattern of sin according to the bible 1John 2 and 3. If the person does it teaches they are not saved. I think the same generational curse is active today. If you see a family who rejects the Lord then usually the next few generations do also. I would not want to make it absolute but that does seem to be the trend

What about a Christian struggling to overcome the same sins as their unsaved relatives?

I read a charismatic generational curses book way back in the past. From memory it seems like some sins are much harder to overcome than others.
