Whats your take on this pastor? I listen to him often and he seems to be the real deal. I do not agree with his KJV Only position, however other than that we agree. He has quoted from Kent Hughes, Jerry Bridges, and John MacArthur. The fact that he quotes from non KJV Only authors indicates he is not an extremist in this area. Whats your deal on him?

    I only know 2 things:

He is highly revered in IFB circles.
There has been scandal associated with the family name.

Yep, and we all know based on your posting history that if people in the IFP like him, he must be evil.

Right...that's why we have quotes from her like:

Yeah...if she thinks IFB is a "denomination", she isn't really qualified to call herself IFB is she?

I've never heard of him but just because he quotes non-kjvo preachers does not mean he isn't kjvo. My previous pastor quoted lots of people, but he is kjvo.

Actually, ABC is right (even if she is IFB). There are at least two definitions for denomination. The, first, and mostly used indicates a hierarchy. The second one (which include most Baptist including SBC and IFB) indicates a common belief. So to make it less confusing, I recommend that when using the first definition - the Capital "C" should be used; and the lower case "c" should be used for the second definition.

ps - if you look we have had full threads on this subject

DISCLAIMER: just because I agree with ABC on this issue does not imply agreement on all issues

I have known Paul Chappell for over 20 years. I also know his father and his younger brother Mark. Paul is a good man, but represents the more moderate wing of the IFBx side of the Independent Baptist spectrum but an xer none the less.

As for moral problems associated with the name, none of that can be laid at Paul's feet. He is a good and Godly man who loves his wife and family. So the moral problems exhibited by his father and brother do not represent Paul's personal conduct in any way.

Don't you mean capital "D" instead of "C"?

The OP asked what we knew of this man, and I answered the post in kind. I never said he (personally) must be evil. Please don't put words in my mouth or try to start an argument with me for answering a simple question. Good grief!

I was a classmate of his dad. Family has issues.

Paul's only issue is being way out on the legalistic ifbXXX level, but not quite as bad as the typicals hylesbot.

    Opinion is mine.

Larry Chappell (Paul's Dad) was my Pastor when I first rededicated my life.
His Mother Edith is our church matriarch. His brother Steve sings in a quartet with me and my husband. I know all the Chappells.

There have been family scandals, they are only sinners saved by grace.

Paul Chappell at West Coast has never been involved in a scandal. Ever.
My young energetic Pastor is a West Coast graduate, as is all the staff at our church.

I am reading one of his books on the Holy Spirit. Although he could use some help in his writing style, overall I have found no error or bad teaching in his book.
