My son is 11 and I was on a board with a bunch of other moms who's children were due in November 2000 from the time I was pregnant with him. Many of us have stuck together and now we're on Facebook. One mom asked today how the others deal with the disrespect that comes with this age and so far three other moms have complained that they are at their wits-end with the disrespect as well.

Then I look across the table at my son. He's not been in school ever and I really think that plays a big role. He also has not seen disrespect in his home and so he is a very respectful kid and I can't imagine him even TRYING to be disrespectful.

Why is it that everyone assumes that a kid in middle school HAS to be disrespectful? "It's normal. It's the age." is what many are saying and I just don't get it. I've gotten a child to 21 without disrespect and the others are following suit. I'm not a super mom by any means but why can't people just realize that the disrespect at 2 is NOT cute and that it only gets worse so work on it now? That kids need to learn respect in order to be able to even have friends and hold a job?? I just don't get it!

The disrespect shown by everyone at our local middle school is the entire reason Jen is being homeschooled. I learned that lesson well when I took Chris out because of his health.

But its not just the kids! At our school it was the teachers, staff and admin as well. The adults didn't respect the kids, the kids didn't respect the adults and well, kids certainly don't respect each other. The entire atmosphere was filled with drama.

My personal feeling is that everyone should have to homeschool their own middle school age heathen until they get them over the hormone hump and tamed back down to nearly civilized. But the way it works here is that parents are active in their kids educations right up to 6th grade and then boom, they dump the kids on the sidewalk outside the school and drive away. After all they are half grown, the teachers can deal with them now. So the disrespect cycle starts because there is no one standing in the gap saying we aren't going to allow that here.

I sent my girls back to school from being homeschooled when they were in 9th grade. I'd NEVER send any of my children to middle school. Ever. God would have to stand before me and tell me Himself that he wanted me to send them - I feel that strongly. I love my boy. He's such a good boy!! To feed him to those vultures? Nah!

For me, my friends have their kids in both public and private but mostly public.

My kids have always been in public school. One is in hs, one in mid school, and one in ele school. We do not have any issues. But I would not tolerate them either.

You're a good mom Ann. It comes through so well in your posts. I wish there were more parents like you and your husband.
