A big problem here on BB is how many threads get off the original subject.

I can understand how it might be easy to stray a bit off track, but many times, a thread ends up like the game of gossip. I'm sure you have played it- you tell one person a story, he whispers it to the second -then the third....and finally to the tenth. When the 10th person says it out loud - it is nothing like the original story.

So first of all, why do we intentionally get a thread off the OP. If we want to take a totally different direction then start a new thread. Often, I have done this - but I will post a link to the new thread.

Before, anyone jumps on me, yes, I have been guilty of the "OP crime" myself. However, I will do my best to walk the "straight and narrow". If I do start straying - feel free to "arrest" me!

There are some great OP - esp when a new member may have a sincere question- so lets show some courtesy and answer the questions they may have.

    Straight Shooter Salty

For starters, I suggest opening a Rick Perry is a wonderful governor and will make a perfect President thread to decoy you-know-who away from any thread discussing the military.

Point taken, Salty, and I've been guilty of it myself. Sometimes a gentle nudge from another poster in the thread is all it takes to put it back on track. We all need reminded sometimes. Then other times some of us just need to be knocked over into another forum, forget the thread!

Chocolate ice cream makes your hair grow too long and leads to dancing.

I can understand just a bit off - and as you say a gentle nudge gets all back on track - usually.

But there are some that no matter what you say, plead or threaten - just stay off OP.
Wait - I think I just got it - could be they don't know how to start a new thread.....

OR...you come in late and just respond to the last remark.

I find a lot of responses so verbose, who knows what the topic is about?

    Cheers,

    Jim

This form of communication is more like a people talking over coffee than a formal situation. It is natural for a conversation to change directions.

I agree - it can happen - we all do it, myself included, but when asked to get back to the OP - it seems as though to some it means to go farther from the OP.

Same thing happens in the Presidential debates. In another thread it was mentioned that Ron Paul was asked a specific question - and he refused to answer - the moderator asked the question a second time and finally a third time - never answering the question.
Another candidate (forget who it was) answerer another question in about 10 seconds - than said "I want to go back to another question".....

I say, lets do our best to answer questions - if you want to change course - then start a new thread. And I am sure that the OP will not mind if you post a link to your new thread. Often I have posted "So I don't hijack this thread - click on this link....."

To me it seems very simple - - so thats why it so hard for some to comply.....
