Revival a call to repentance

Will our country ever see another Great Awaking? From everything I read in the Bible, every time the nation of Israel had revival, it came with much repentance of sin and walking in righteousness.

As I read many post of the brethren, sin seems to be something that is not possible to overcome. Never mind the fact that we are told to walk in holiness and righteousness and never mind the fact that the word of God gives in great detail, How to overcome sin.

When one does repeat the words of the Bible that tells us to walk in the Spirit and not after the flesh, and sin not, We are ridiculed by our own. We are told we are preaching sinless perfection, even though not all do.

We are told that we can't walk in righteousness because we are still in this sinful body. We sin every day, we are told. It is as if they are saying, we will sin every day so why try.

Are we using our liberty in Christ to sin?
Is there no repentance of sin left in us?
Are we advocates for sin or overcoming sin? Do we really have anything to offer the lost, this side of heaven?

I view the problem you state above as the natural result of addressing the very error that John addressed in 1 John. There are those that claim...they do not sin.

I see it all the time: someone makes the claim on a forum that sinless perfection in this life is possible, and that is refuted by those who do not see this as a possibility. They argue, and the one side goes to the extreme that they don't sin, the other that they do, leaving the impression that both sides are seated to the extreme position.

However, if those who believe that sinless perfection is possible in this life would be honest, they would admit that they do, at times, sin.

And if the other side would make it clear that yes, they see holiness as a command of scripture (not a means of salvation), and they are constantly shown by God sin in their life and they do in fact try to mortify the deeds of the flesh...maybe both sides could refrain from letting the defense of their positions blow up into a shouting match where both sides must look foolish to an onlooking world.

If we read back about that great awakening, the greatest opposition indeed came from certain denominational corners. The hate and vile spewed by professors of religion at any and all that would try and awaken the church to its lost state are ridiculed an maligned, slandered and mocked.

So if you are asking me, I would say God will have to largely work outside of the churches if He desires to do a work again in our nation and in spite of the false notions coming forth from so many pulpits, and apart from the religious rulers of our day.

Oh God, send us another Finney.

The church as I see it and probably as most from the outside see it, is corrupt, that is why we need a revival. But as you say, it most likely will not come from the establishment as wee see it. Until we are prepared to have a contrite heart, and repent, revival is unlikely at best.

Matt, the truth is that the allegation of preaching 'salvation by works' is highly subjective and often nothing more than a false accusation. That term is thrown around usually as nothing more than a convenient tool used most often by antinomians against all opposition. We will all have our day in God's court and shall see where the truth actually lies.

The words of the apostle James come to mind: "do not err my beloved brethren."

Okay. You quoted me as saying something I did not.

I told you, you did not have to go back far to find it.

And, as I said, it is a good example, HP, of how man can sin unawares, for, though you did it by mistake, most likely in haste, you still attributed something to me which I did not state.

Failure to recognize sin on our lives does not excuse of either it being sin, or the penalty that the law exacts if one is guilty in one point. I have been a little facetious about it, but I am sure you would agree that what I am saying is a valid point. You know that saying someone else said or did something when they in fact did not is bearing false witness, this is why God stipulated "two or three," to prevent a "mistake" being made, or at least, to hinder those that might, in either haste or error, accuse someone of saying or doing something they did not do.

Here, no big deal, right?

Then, it was a matter of life and death. Physical life and death. For as Christ was put to death based upon false witness, error in understanding, and hatred, you know yourself that men were, by the law, put to death.

Okay, look, no need to apologize, really, I am as thick-skinned as the next guy. But I do hope you will at least consider this example which I feel the Lord has provided for...both of us.

I have done that. In fact, I have spent some time mulling it over, because I do not want to find myself guilty as well (you know, "Thou that preachest that one should not steal...)...lol.

All in all, I can see the humor (and enjoy it), but I have decided that it was...a great illustration, and just cause for me, and all of us, to humble ourselves before the Lord, in recognition of our need for Him to show us our sin.

One of the worst things that could happen to a man is that he no longer recognizes sin in his life. Spiritual amnesia, so to speak.

Okay, really going this time, I have irritated enough people here, as well as my wife (and that is sin, I know), so hope all have a great weekend, and a Happy New Year (is that a pagan holiday?).

I fairly presented the truth, which is why it stung when you read it. Freewillers? Well, they believe in their power to choose, so let them all choose revival and make it happen, OK?
