I know that over the past 5 or so years that there have been various discussions about the Duggars, but I have a different question today.

In light of the fact that Michelle is a medically high-risk patient for pregnancy (being 45 years old) and this last child died in the womb and the one before barely made and still may have developmental delays....

....do you consider their unprotected marital sex to be tempting or testing God at this point in their lives?

When does trusting God turn over into foolish risk-taking?

I'm not interested in talking about their lifestyle or their other children or their amount of children, but I am pondering over any potential future children and Michelle and Jim-Bob's responsibility to not take medical risks.

I think that it's a decision between them and God.

My sister gave birth to my beautiful nieces at 45 years old.

I don't believe so. I had two miscarriages before my last child and pre-eclampsia in one pregnancy doesn't mean you'll have it again. I think her body is getting ready to slow down and as such, it's much less likely she will conceive as she ages but just having unprotected sex at 45 years old is not at all testing God. I could never see having unprotected sex as tempting or testing God.

I believe if a doctor advises against her having any more children, yes, she would be testing God in the same way a person who does not take medication under doctor orders.

What if she were to get pregnant anyway? Birth control is not 100% effective. Is that testing God as well? They would know that birth control is not fully effective so maybe they should just stop having sex??

You don't have to tell me  we were taking measures to not have any more children when we did.
Not at all! That would be coming to a joint decision based on reason and circumstances. Testing God would be having unprotected relations during the time that leads to fertility after the doctor warns not to have any more kids.
non sequitur. To no longer have sex based on less than 1% chance of conception doesn't make sense. He can get fixed too, making the odds of conception like that of winning the lottery.

No, they should not stop. But, and this is just a hypothetical on my part, but if they have been medically advised not to get pregnant again, they they should take precautions not to get pregnant. That doesn't mean stop having sex.

If they did get hypothetically get pregnant while following any hypothetical medical advice, then I don't think that would be tempting God.

Lets say the doctor tells me the next pregnancy will kill my wife. As a husband and father is it tempting God to have unprotected sex? Should I be getting fixed and still use other means to doubly ensure my wife never gets pregnant...or do I just throw up my hands and say "I'm not changing anything, just trusting God"?

See, while I'm not her doctor, I don't see anything in her history that would say "She will die if she gets pregnant again." Pre-eclampsia and miscarriages happen in 20 year old women as well.

However, if my doctor were to tell me that if I were to get pregnant again that I would have a great risk of dying, I'd most likely get my tubes tied, remove my uterus, have hubby fixed and get separate bedrooms. ;)

But I don't believe that she is at any more risk of death than any other 40 something year old woman. I'm going to be 47 next month and am still fertile and my doctor said that despite 4 c-sections and 2 miscarriages and 7 D&Cs, if I want more babies to go for it.

We just don't know what her doctor has said to her - only what other doctors who have not seen her medical files would say.

Agreed, but based on the last couple pregnancies it is fact she is putting the child's life at risk. That is just as important in making the decision, IMO.

I disagree. She had pre-eclampsia. MANY women have pre-eclampsia and go on to have pregnancies without it. I believe she experienced pre-eclampsia in one of her very early pregnancies as well.

Miscarriage is a fact of most women, unfortunately. I had two when I was actively trying to have more children. Had I given up, I'd not have my two most amazing younger children.

I'm not talking about the exceptions, I'm talking about the research that backs complications in pregnancies in older women. With this knowledge I believe it is testting God. You cannot test God in ignorance.

I know MANY women who have even their first babies in their 40s. Yes, it can result in complications but MANY women do it because the complications are just a risk - not a guarantee.

You can't believe everything a doctor tells you and you certainly can't make decisions in light of the "statistics".

The statistic and the doctors told my friend 20 years ago after she lost a tube and ovary to a "tubal" pregnancy, that her fertility would be greatly reduced. 6 weeks later she was still pregnant. She had been pregnant with twins and the stats say the possibility of not losing the second twin after such a tramatic event are extremely low. Well that twin turns 18 this year. Oh and my frined had 7 more after that one. (some intentional, some the results of bc not being 100% effective. :D )

No, the Duggars should be aware of the risks of another pregnancy, and I'm sure they are, but I see no reason they should stop having s*x or use bc if it goes against their beliefs.

Interesting way to gain fame and fortune - and to qualify for free school lunches and other government benefits.

Yet they receive no free lunches (nor do they even receive free education since they homeschool) nor do they receive government aid.
