I have seen some posts that exceed hundreds of words. Often several Bible verses will be quoted and ect, ect, ect.

Than in addition to this folks will "quote" the entire post of another person.

    Way too much reading

I contend if you need more than 150-200 words (normally) its too much

    Thoughts?

ps - this post has 60 words

I can't stand the reprinting of other's posts. I just ignore whatever is said and look for the simpler messages.

    Cheers,

I rarely read a post that long.....my motto in life....K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple, sister). There are very few subjects that would require an answer of more than a few words. I will admit, I do avoid the Cal/Arm debates like the plague. That's where you find most of the foot long posts .

I ignore very long posts, because the point of it gets lost in a multitude of words. I also ignore posts that are poorly written with misspellings, poor punctuation, poor grammar, and impossible-to-read sentence structure that looks like it was written by a 7-year-old.

One thing I will never understand the purpose of is quoting someone but not adding any comment.

Jim, are you referring to just a sentence or to of a quote - which gives a background (such as I did just above) or are you talking about any "quoted" posts

    :thumbsup::thumbs:

Jon, you and I would love to hear an answer from someone who constantly quotes entire long posts and/or post an extremely long post.

Anybody out there willing to explain why?

I am sure I am one of those considered to write many long posts. The reason is that to posit a point of view from scripture, it is often necessary to post multiple scriptures to prove one single scripture is not pulled out of context, to prove that all scripture agrees on the point I am trying to make.

Or sometimes I will answer a long post, quoting a few lines at a time and responding. This is simply to show the other poster I have read their post and considered their points, and am now responding point by point.

And lastly, sometimes it is necessary to go into detail to explain what I believe so that I cannot be misrepresented by those opposed to my personal views, a tactic that seems very popular with the other side. Just today I was misrepresented twice by my opponents.

Agree.....can't abide the tedium of really long posts.

Having spent much of my life being swamped with information I adore simplistic bulleted notices.

I asked at catechism if the Summa Theologica had been condensed to a Readers Digest style. Our instructor had a look of very limited amusement:laugh:

And herein, I believe, lies the problem. Some view other posters as opponents. Some have to go into lengthy detail to prove/defend/uphold/try to make their point. It's really not all that necessary.

One thing I've learned here is that it's seldom you'll get someone else to change their point of view. The chances of that are less than the chances of a leopard changing their spots. Sometimes it's better simply not to say anything at all, or to say "I see your point but I disagree" and leave it at that. I'm working on this one myself.

Well, some folks are opponents, whether a person likes it or not. The Word of God and the gospel is a life or death matter, it is not a game. I rarely participate in threads about subjects like drinking for example, because it is not a life and death matter. I don't think Christians should drink (poor witness), but who am I to tell others what to do? But if a subject is important, I think it is necessary to contend for the faith.

And it is not always concern for my opponent that makes me post. As you said, most folks are fixed in their ways and are not going to change. But there are many folks who visit this site who never post (lurkers). I do not want them to be influenced by what I believe is false doctrine, or at least I want them to see another point of view, with scripture to back it up. These folks may not know exactly what to believe.

Trust me, I get very tired of it all sometimes, but it is important to contend for what I believe is the truth.

I happen to agree with you that the Gospel is not a game. However, neither is it a tool to bash over the heads of ones "opponents." I often wonder what lurkers think of the attitudes and behaviors of the people who post here. I know what I thought, as I lurked here for quite some time. Basically, what I saw was a bunch of posturing folks who enjoyed listening to themselves speak.

You see, I believe God uses the simplest of things to reach someone for Heaven. There's a man who, when he speaks to others, uses one word....Jesus. That opens the opportunity for him to share about Christ. We spend too much time contending for the faith with one another, trying to prove our point, instead of speaking to others of Christ.
