Corporate worship is just an extension of our personal worship. God is praised in my worship whether it be slow hymns or emotional choruses. We sing loudly to God in my home & in our church. It has nothing to do with "secular" music; whatever that is. Secular vs sacred music is never defined in Scripture. The only delineation is the words we use & the subject of our praise. Scripture does not put restrictions on how enthusiastically we worship God in our music. I know from the Scripture I posted, and many others, that God is honored when we sing loudly, emotionally, enthusiastically to Him. David sang & danced before God because the ark, a symbol of the person & presence of God, had returned. How much more should we sing & dance before God when we have the indwelling person & presence of God with us. There is more to celebrate under the New Covenant than under the Law. BTW, I don't dance but will not condemn anyone for dancing before God within the assembly. After all, did not Michel condemn David & was left barren? Hmmmmm

    Christian Music vs NON-Christian Music

As the title suggests,by "secular",I mean NON-Christian music that has nothing to to with God,the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit or His Holy Word. That suggests nothing about volume but that said I think it is totally ludicrous and senseless to try and attach "Christian" lyrics to overpoweringly loud music that completely drowns out the message contained in said lyrics. It's like talking Spanish in a room full of non-spanish speaking folk....kinda useless unless of course there is someone there to tell you what the guy says. I'm an older guy (58 years old) but I was raised musically on Hard Rock,Classic Rock,Country Rock,Reggae,Jazz and Blues. If I wasn't saved I'd still be listening to that stuff more than likely...and even now if I'm not careful my flesh can be drawn to it if I happen to hear it from some source. I never was drawn to the lyrics but the music itself sure had a powerful pull on me. I reject all that now....and I always will. And frankly anybody can say what they wish and think what they want but I'll NEVER be convinced that there is any way to "Christianize" any of that. It is of the world and as Christians we are not to love it. By the way (in my opinion) when you apply the term "sacred" to something...it better be up to that kind of standard...either in direct chapter, verse, jot or tittle, or if not then at least there better be a reasonably applicable principle of scriptural teaching to afix to it.

    Some More Hummmmm!

Off subject! I believe Arthur Smith who was born in Clinton, SC, would be happy with you bring up his work here. I don't know if you would like his work but he has over 100 gospel music compositions out there.

I almost hesitate to say it here Bob...but Gospel Bluegrass and some of the original style Southern Gospel (before most of it became too "performance" or "entertainment" based,is perhaps some of my favorite music. The kind I'm talking about is the kind that seeks to be at home in the church or the old camp-meetings and not as a paid, ticketed event in a concert hall. I'm talking ministry...not entertainment. Many of the bigger names in the "business" started off simple and in Church and then let money and fame "go to their heads". I don't know if that was the case with Arthur Smith but ut has happened with many.If they get too "big" to play to the local church crowd....then they (as we say in the south) "done got too big".(In my humble opinion) Ok...time to veer back on topic!

Once I was watching cable and saw a video of the Carpenter's singing "On Top of the World." I thought that was a divine message to conquer the North Pole. Having no money, I robbed a bank, went down to the Greyhound Station and bought a ticket to the North Pole. Fifteen days later, I had to transfer to a sleigh. Upon arrival at the North Pole, I was arrested by the EBI. (Elf Bureau of Investigation) Don't be arrested by the EBI. Get rid of cable and secular music, get direct TV and sing along with "I'll Fly Away."

    Not Going There....

We'll not revisit that part of the movie....matter of fact I probably never should have used that analogy. Time to get back on-topic.

Sorry I never saw the movie. All I know is that a friend of mine says that everytime he hears dueling banjos.

    A Job Offer !!

You should send that to Direct TV....you may have a new career as a TV commercial script writer. I'll ask for a 10% royalty for making the suggestion!:tongue3: (I think this might mean we are watching too much TV!)

    Be Glad..

Like many of the "Hellywood" movies I have seen,I can say for certain that this is another one that I would have been better off NOT seeing. That said though...the scene with the Banjo/Guitar duel was good. Just for the music.

    Apologies due.....

I believe a possible apology is due from me to Sapper Woody. Brother, I didn't mean to apparently hijack what has up to now been a lively and interesting thread. I get more than just a little passionate about this music issue because music in general has played such a big role in my personal life and walk with the Lord. It has both pulled me down when I wasn't living for God and helped to "raise me up" when I have been trying to walk faithfully with and for Him. Music is a force to be reckoned with either for Good....or Evil!
Maybe you can "re-align" this discussion and get it back on track. I hope some of the things I have said and shared have been useful. God Bless You. I'll also share a link that might be a blessing to you and everybody with some good singing and even better preaching from this years 65th Annual Greer Baptist Campmeeting from here in South Carolina. I hope everybody finds it a blessing.

No worries. Anything I had to say on the matter has been said, and I believe that both sides have had their say. As usual, neither side has made any progress with the other side. What I brought up was simply to spark thoughtful discussion.
