Stericycle Controversy: Mitt Romney Invested In Medical-Waste Firm That Disposed Of A

Romney says he is pro-life, but he made lots of money by investing in a company that has made lots of money desposing of aborted fetuses.

One of the highest performing companies in which the private equity firm founded by Mitt Romney invested is now a top target of the most vehement anti-abortion groups in the nation.

Stericycle, a massive medical waste disposal service company, received a $75 million investment from Bain Capital in 1999 and soon became an industry leader. Today, it has more than 485,000 customers worldwide. Its clients include hospitals, blood banks, and pharmaceutical manufacturers. But it has also helped dispose of medical waste from Planned Parenthood and abortion clinics -- waste that included aborted fetuses -- and that has attracted the ire of the pro-life community and establishment Republicans.

So you believe that abortions are bad, but that to make money from abortions is good. Interesting contridiction ... but making money is the Republican god.

Of course, if everyone knows that Romney wasn’t at Bain at the time, the attack won’t work. So in order to drive down turnout among pro-life voters, the Obama campaign needs the electorate to believe Romney was at Bain from 1999 to 2002.

UPDATE: More useful information from Steven Ertelt of LifeNews.com here. Among the highlights:

Bain Capital sold off 40 percent of its shares in Stericycle in 2001 and sold the rest by 2004.
Stericycle apparently began contracting with abortion clinics in 2007.
The pro-life community only became aware of Stericycle’s role in abortion clinics, and campaigning against its work, in 2011.

Despite the fact that the timeline contradicts the smear, I’ll bet you a doughnut that somebody tries to discourage pro-life turnout by telling likely pro-life audiences that Mitt Romney “profited from abortions” this autumn.

Bain's investment of $75 million was in 1999 while Romney, I believe, was still with Bain.

Bain says Romney left a few months before the investment. Of course it seems that may not be true as his name is on some documents after that and he refuses to let the board minutes be made public.

Regardless, such an investment would have taken months and months of research and board discussions, so he must have been in on the discussions. My guess is that the investment of 75 million would not have reached the "yes invest" stage without his approval.

I believe he has some big problems and needs to come clean on them and stop stonewalling them. The stonewalling will only make him look guilty.

Why does anyone ever want to be president?

The only thing I can say, and this is just an example, not to derail your thread, but when Steve Jobs "stepped down" because of his health reasons, he was still officially still the CEO of Apple on paper....just because someone's name is still listed as CEO doesn't necessarily mean they are active participants.

Anyway, the facts are, the medical waste for abortions didn't come about until well after Romney was gone, according to the link I posted.

This is just another sideshow to turn public attention away from the failed policies of this president. And as far as illegalities, trampling on the Constitution as this administration has done like Fast and Furious and failure to prosecute the Black Panthers for voter intimidation and more, the obama administration is certainly not "lily white" pardon the pun.

The above is another lying post by Crabtownboy. This is getting ridiculous. I believe this is the third time today he has posted a quote from a leftist website without giving complete reference. The huffington post is bad enough but Mother Jones makes Marx look capitalist.

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/07/romney-bain-abortion-stericycle-sec

Earlier this year, Mitt Romney nearly landed in a politically perilous controversy when the Huffington Post reported that in 1999 the GOP presidential candidate had been part of an investment group that invested $75 million in Stericycle, a medical-waste disposal firm that has been attacked by anti-abortion groups for disposing aborted fetuses collected from family planning clinics. Coming during the heat of the GOP primaries, as Romney tried to sell South Carolina Republicans on his pro-life bona fides, the revelation had the potential to damage the candidate's reputation among values voters already suspicious of his shifting position on abortion.

But Bain Capital, the private equity firm Romney founded, tamped down the controversy. The company said Romney left the firm in February 1999 to run the troubled 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and likely had nothing to with the deal. The matter never became a campaign issue. But documents filed by Bain and Stericycle with the Securities and Exchange Commission—and obtained by Mother Jones—list Romney as an active participant in the investment. And this deal helped Stericycle, a company with a poor safety record, grow, while yielding tens of millions of dollars in profits for Romney and his partners. The documents—one of which was signed by Romney—also contradict the official account of Romney's exit from Bain.

It has been proven that Romney left Bain in 1999 yet CTB continues to post these lies. I beat up on Obama because I believe he is an abomination, a murderer of babies. But I believe I can support what I post. CTB can't and I challenged him on another thread.

CTB has no problem with abortion. Does he want the bodies discarded in an open field as some clinics have.

Some years back a trash dumpster full of dead babies was discovered [California I believe.] . A Church wanted to have a funeral service for the babies, The baby killers went to court to stop the service. I believe after a long court battle the Church was able to hold the service. Here we have a good example of the people that Crabtownboy defends and supports.

I have asked this question many times, on this board and elsewhere: How does a Christian justify supporting the slaughter of the unborn?

The hypocrisy of the democrats is unreal. They routinely use "poor little children" to justify expanding the destruction of liberty by the Federal government but also use the slaughter of the unborn to win the vote of a certain segment of the politician, like Crabtownboy!

I agree.

Shame on anyone who would stoop to such lows as to argue abortion with someone who can't even call it a sin.

Also, and I didn't want to post this, but when Phyllis' son was killed, we could not recover any of his property that was considered a "bio" hazard. Anything with blood on it, or anything else that fit under this description, the clothes he was wearing, and a lot of his personal effects we couldn't legally take into posession, but were still liable for the disposal cost. I guess you could call it an "unexpected" expense, but yes, there are companies who make a profit in this business.

When I die, I hope not to leave a big clean-up expense, but God bless the people who have to do that awful job, which I'm sure the libbies make worse by making everyone fill everything out in triplicate.

Serious challenge, C.T.Boy, I would likle you to tell us the difference between an aborted fetus and ANY other medical garbage.

So you believe that abortions are bad, but that to make money from abortions is good.

Honst question- Are you for abortion? If so, shame on you. If not, you have no place lecturing about contradictions, because you certainly seem pro Obama.

And they earned at least a $49.5 million profit. Not bad if you do not mind how the profits were earned.

I don't really see any controversy here. Whether a person is killed in an accident, dies of natural causes or is murdered, their body must be disposed of in some manner.

In fact, this is a service, as gruesome as it sounds, it's still a service. And of course the company that does this must profit, or they won't be in business very long.

So now that your entire OP has been discredited because Stericycle did not begin contracting with abortion clinics until three years after Bain Capital sold their interest...

You decide to go off topic and want to talk about how much Bain Capital profited on their investment?

Either your debating skills are non-existent...

Or you have less than a tangential understanding of truth and honesty.
