I saw Jack and his wife (the very gracious Cindy) just a few weeks ago at FBC. (Had some good fellowship with some of the folks and one of the assistants, too.) This one hit me hard. I couldn't sleep the night I heard about it.

I do believe the church did the right thing. Hopefully they will find a good pastor to take them into the future. I can't imagine taking over the pastorate of a church that big and that much in the spotlight.

Bro.John, May I ask if FBC Hammond is one of your supporting churches?...and if so how do you feel about the church in light of the many accusations that were leveled at Dr.Hyles and his son dave prior to his death and now all this mess with Dr. Schaap? I do know that the entire history seems to be sorted in light of it. I was out of church for a span of more than a few years and out of fellowship with the Lord when most of the stuff with Dr.Hyles and Dr.Bob Gray took place. When I heard about all of this after I got back in fellowship with the Lord you could have knocked me over with a feather! It really took the wind from me and broke my heart (and still does). For the record, I was a resident at Bro.Roloff's "City of Refuge" in Corpus Christi,Texas back in 1980-1981 and after returning to Greenville,got married and enrolled at Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville under Dr.Gray's ministry. I could tell you more history on that but that would be private between us. In any case....I am personally sad but somewhat grateful that the Lord chose to take Bro.Roloff home before all this stuff became public. I know he truly loved and respected both men and would have been broken-hearted to have heard ANY of this. I was working in the front gate guardhouse at the college that night in 1982 that it became known that Bro.Roloff's plane had gone down....I cried like a baby. I thank God that I was able to have a part in Bro.Roloff's ministry before he went home. I learned much there. That said...inspite of all those who would bash on Dr.Hyles and Dr.Gray,I was blessed by both of those men's preaching in my early Christian life and saddened greatly when they fell. It is also sad that after all these years Dr.Hyles daughter,Linda Hyles Murphrey has now come out and basically confirmed everything her dad was accused of (and then some). The enemies of our Lord will laugh themselves all the way to hell I'm sure. I have always tried to NOT put any man on a "pedestal". I don't even like to refer to someone as Dr.,preferring the term brother..or sister instead. I think it is more appropriate. For the record...I got that attitude and feeling from dear old Bro.Roloff. He once said (after BJU gave him and "honorary" doctorate) that "calling him "Doctor" was like putting whip creme on an onion!" I was there when he said that! Priceless!
For the record, I have never heard Dr.Schaap preach and have pretty much avoided listening after FBC Hammond preachers and preaching since I heard all the stuff about Dr.Hyles. I guess I though I'd be safer avoiding the whole mess so there is no point in changing now. I just want to focus my time and what is left of my life here on getting closer to the Lord and trying to fruitfully serve Him here. That is challenge enough. OK...I'm done for now....your comments and outlook on all this would be a welcome blessing. I would be interested on your opinions about all of this.

John Vaughn was my former Pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Taylors SC. Pastor Vaughn was and is a godly and wise man blessed by God with a good and balanced sense of wisdom an judgment. Thank you for sharing his article on this sad matter. It is good advise.

I agree on Pastor Vaughn. We had the joy of meeting and dining with him and his family while on deputation when we had a meeting in Taylors. I trust him as a solid voice of balanced fundamentalism.

 

This particular offense of his is obviously horrifying, but he's been preaching and practicing pure, straight evil for years, as did his predecessor. It's, unfortunately, just another sad diversion from the real Kingdom work going on elsewhere.

 

These situations are allways so unbelievably tragic and sad.

And of course every time something like this comes up the lost world just RUNS WITH IT like nobodies buisness.

We are all a bunch of hypocrits, we are all phony, we all are a bunch of liars, etc etc etc

 

Well. That kinda came out of left field. And it is very strong rebuke. Could you explain further?

What evil has he been propagating? Word of Faith? Hard core legalism? Some other phony gospel? etc etc?

 

I think we should consider the number of Senior or Head Pastors who thought of themselves as spiritually superior to the Elders of the Church, such that they did not report to and accept they were accountable to the Elder Board. Know it All elitist often are embroiled in power struggles and the pitfalls of not being accountable to those who have access to the details of the Pastor's life.

People who think of themselves as the smartest person in the room engage in questionable activities such as Bill Clinton and the intern. There is a pattern, and the Bible provides the remedy. The issue is not this guy is good, and that guy is bad. We all are tempted by Satan, the World and our fleshly desires. The Biblical example of a fundamental church is lead by a group of Elders, and the Teaching Elder reports to and is accountable to that group of men, striving to be Christ-like, especially in humility.

 

Bill Clinton was a diagnosed sexual addict....men of power
generally fall into that category, the article said.

Lord - help Pastors to steer clear of such issues!!!!

 

This situation should open the eyes of believers to the fundamental dysfunction in our churches. In a place where they supposedly train young men how to know God & understand His will, they had no idea just how wicked their leader is. In fact, I've seen video of of the students saying they still supported Schaap. Out of the thousands of students & church members, how is it that no one had the spiritual discernment to see the truth? What would have been the reaction by Schaap & the staff had someone voiced their concerns? They would have been run out of the church. That's what happens at cultish groups. They are taught what to believe; not how to study God's Word.

This is the greater wickedness at FBC. Thousands upon thousands of young men are sent out falsely believing they have been instructed in the knowledge of the Word. Instead, they have been indoctrinated into a mindset that does not allow them to see truth that does not conform to their denominational ideology.
