I really don't see that as a sense of entitlement but instead, an honest look at a player's heart and the struggle to decide do you play with one of the best teams and be close to home - or make more money? It's a fair decision.

I am the first one to say that many pro players are paid a very large sum of money.

The average salary for sports is:
    NBA 5.2 million
    MLB 2.5 million
    NFL 1.75 million
    NHL 1.3 million

So in MLB with 162 games, we could say a player makes about $15,000 per game
But - the season is not just 162 games - there is about 8-10 weeks of spring training - so add in that extra 50 days and that brings the average down. Also - when a game goes into extra innings - there is no overtime. Add in the constant travel - sure they spend nights in a hotel - but I suppose that gets tired after a while. How about taxes - first - they are in a high tax bracket - so they do pay a lot of taxes. Second - states such as NY requires you to pay income tax on the days you are in NY - ie a player for the Cleveland Indians must pay NY tax for the days they are in NY. Imagine how many tax returns they have to file!
Yes, they make good money - but you do need to look at all three sides of an issue.

Here's a sentence from Jay Glazer:

If he blows his knee(s) out and never plays another game, that's his. How many us will never see 2 million dollars, let alone, 15.6 million.

Plus, this contract is on top of the one year, 2.876(approx amount) deal he already signed as a restricted FA. IOW, he's in "fat city"......

I do! And the main topic of that discussion is one Jamarcus Russell. The QB from LSU that I didn't want to begin with. I wanted Calvin "Megatron" Johnson, but nooooooooo, Uncle Al went with "Jeff George, Part deux".....a million dollar arm and a 10 cent brain. We had to shell out another 3 million to him just the other day!!! He got approx 34 million and didn't do anything of signifigance while in Oakland. I hate that Al Davis passed, but he had driven us into the ground and made us the laughing stock of the NFL. Jerry Jones is doing the same thing in Dallas, and he was a BIG fan of Uncle Al. He gave Tony Romo a new contract worth over 100 million, and 55-58 million of it guaranteed. Romo is a pretty decent QB, but he's getting about the same.....thinking more......than one Tom Brady! That's stupidity to the inth degree.....and something that Uncle Al did all the time......overpay for mediocre to fair talent.

    Just Wince Baby

Victor Cruz took LESS money to stay with the Giants when he could have made more from another team and you call him greedy? How is that being greedy?

Victor Cruz stayed with the Giants because his family was close and you call him stupid for that? Most people tend to call athletes smart when they value something more than a paycheck, but you defy all logic and reason by doing the exact opposite.

How? Please explain how this is a sense of entitlement, because I don't see it.

    Completely agree.

There's so much wrong here, but let's start with Tom Brady.

If you had bothered to do a little research, you would have found that he willingly took less money than he could have made from somebody else so that he could stay with the Patriots. Brady wasn't intending to set the market for QB's, he was helping the Patriots free up cap space, which he has done at least 3 times now, so that they could sign the players they thought they needed to win the Super Bowl.

As for Romo, there's something very important that you need to understand. Romo is a franchise QB and teams don't let franchise QB's walk. Had Romo not signed a new contract, some other QB starved team, like the Raiders for instance, would have signed him and the Cowgirls would have had to start from scratch with a rookie QB, something they didn't want to do if they didn't have to. Romo, or Romo's agent, understood this and used his leverage to get a fancy new contract with lots of zeroes.

I think you would do well to educate yourself about things like this before you throw the word stupid around to describe things that really aren't all that stupid.

How many people are NFL caliber players? It's a super elite group. Basic supply and demand.

It's a good gig if you can get it.

I know full well about Brady's situation. Look, he got ~58 million guaranteed, and that's not peanuts.

Romo a franchise QB? Really? What games are you watching? When the games are meaningful, he melts quicker than a snowball on the beaches of Hawaii.

He's NOT a franchise QB. They don't lose the meaningful games.....or at least as many as Romo has.

Romo's career #'s are very good, but he's choked way too much to be given the kind of money Jones gave him, imo. If I was a Cowboys' fan, I'd be extremely miffed at that.

I'm not so sure you do. Brady signed his contract before Romo signed his. As I said before, Brady's contract was not setting the market for contracts. If Brady's contract was setting the market for QB pay, Romo would have gotten less. The 2 situations are entirely different.

Does he? Did you know that Romo led the league with 5 fourth-quarter comebacks last season? Did you know that he had a 6th comeback against the Saints when the Cowgirls came back from 14 points down in 5 minutes to force overtime? Did you know he had a 7th comeback against the Ravens when the kicker missed a game-winning FG? Over the past 5 seasons, when the game has been within 1 score in the 4th quarter, the only QB's with a higher passer rating than Romo are Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning and Drew Brees.

There are plenty of QB's I'd rather have than Romo, but let's just not swallow the media narrative about him without examining all the facts.

Franchise QB's lose big games all the time. Tom Brady's lost 2 Super Bowls and 2 AFC Championship Games in his career. As I tried to point out, the Cowboys could not let Tony Romo become a free agent after this season, because the QB starved teams of the league, like the Cardinals, Raiders and Jets, for instance, would have absolutely paid Romo the kind of money the Cowgirls are paying him.

You're right on with your last statement. The Cowgirls are going to have a problem putting the kind of team on the field that their fans demand for 2 reasons. #1, they're getting hammered on cap space because of the penalty they got from the NFL for circumventing a salary cap that didn't exist when the owners were locking the players out. I still don't understand how the NFL got away with doing that. #2, they gave Romo a big contract, and doing that was a direct result of #1 happening.

I would also appreciate it if you were to address the questions I had about why you called Victor Cruz greedy and stupid.

Listen, CCR, none of us, or a vast majority thereof, will never see the amount of coinage he has coming to his bank account. To get a guaranteed contract worth ~15 million and still not be entirely enthused with it, is greedy and stupid, imo. Now, my opinion and 5 bucks will get you a Starbucks coffee.

One time, John Kruk signed a deal, and it was below what many thought was his market value. When asked why he signed that deal, he said, "Look, my dad worked in the coal mines for years, and never saw that kind of money." Or womething similiar to that.

Thanks for the explanation. I still don't agree, but I understand your point better and that's all I can ask for.

I loved John Kruk when he was with the Phillies. John's teammate, Larry Andersen, once said, "They paid me next to nothing and I was worth every bit of it!"

You can't call Victor Cruz greedy as one poster says. As he wanted to remain with the team. Plus his has family. So yes he could had gone elsewhere and played with more money. But Eli Manning is glad he is staying.
