How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth
By Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart
    Format: Paperback
    Number of Pages: 288
    Vendor: Zondervan
    Publication Date: 2003
    Dimensions: 8 X 5.31 (inches)
    ISBN: 0310246040
    ISBN-13: 9780310246046
    UPC: 025986246044
    Cost: About 10 Dollars

This is really a wonderful book. Neither of the authors are Baptists. Nonetheless, the exegetical methods taught in this book are not colored by doctrinal presuppositions, nor should they have done.

Given the numerous challenges our fellow Baptists have in handling the Word -- as evidences so frequently in this forum and our experience -- I would encourage anyone to read this book. It is easy to read, full of helpful rules and anecdotes.

I give it away all the time. But I would never arrogantly tie it to other members of this board as needing it.

Arrogantly? Hmmm... I sure needed it, I thought that perhaps others might also need it. I do not know the members of this board. You see, all we have is text. The text admits of some need. Furthermore, I continue to need it. I am glad you are able to give it to people (no doubt without arrogance) who -- one may assume -- need it. Seems as though we who have it are a needy bunch! :)

I'll have to pick that up. I have NT Exegesis by Fee and it has proved a good resource for me.

Not a "sir" - I work for a living

I like Walton's ANE Thought and the OT for examining what the OT would mean to its contemporary audience.

May I add Principles of Biblical Interpretation by Louis Berkhof? Again, not a Baptist but an excellent approach to hermeneutics and exegesis.

I have the book and found it very helpful although I haven't fully put it into practice. I found it to be more of a study and this is needed today for I too believe many in the pews today have no idea how to read and understand the bible.

I apologize. It is something grounded deep in me from my parents. I don't mean it as anything other than in deference and respect. Your tolerance of my foibles will probably be needed regularly. Still, I will make an effort to adjust.

I am not familiar with this work. I hope that he emphasizes that the Scripture always and ever means only what it meant at the time it was written. Nonetheless, I certainly recognize that each of us have a specific cultural and historical context with all its attendant presuppositions. The former notion is an important principle of orthodox hermeneutics, the latter is an important principle of effective pedagogy.

I have three friends in particular (a Christian African, a Christian Chinese, and a Christian African American) who have been very helpful in allowing me to see my own context. As my grandfather always used to say, "The fish is always last to see the water."

By the way, do you have the ISBN number of Walton's book handy?

    Old habits die hard :D

No need to apologize - I've been called worse that "sir"...and I was just being silly. I'll see if I can find the book and give you the ISBN.

How to Choose a Translation for All Its Worth.
By Gordon D.Fee and Mark L. Strauss
    Format :paperback
    Number of pages : 170
    Vendor : Zondervan
    Publication Date : 2007

It is packed with solid, helpful, information that many here would find very practical and perhaps new. Some who have endorsed it are D.A. Carson,Walter Kaiser Jr.,Daniel Block,Darrell Bock,Warren Wiersbe and John Ortberg to name just a few.

And I also hope that it won't seem arrogant to make a book suggestion for the BB cast and crew!
