    This autobiographical account by a former slave is one of the few extant narratives written by a woman. Written and published in 1861, it delivers a powerful portrayal of the brutality of slave life. Jacobs speaks frankly of her master's abuse and her eventual escape, in a tale of dauntless spirit and faith.

    I have this book back in America. I bought it about seven years ago. She refused to be subjugated to a slave life. The slave owners thought she had escaped to the North. She was really living in the narrow attic of her freed mom's home as I recall. She couldn't communicate with her children,but some seemed to sense that she was looking at them. It was risky for her to openly get together with them. It has been awhile. I read it along with Uncle Tom's Cabin since I had not read the latter earlier in my life.

    I read Uncle Tom's Cabin last winter. I must say this book is a harder one to read as the experience of this woman was much worse than anything described in Stowe's novel and I suppose that is not surprising. Uncle Tom's Cabin is fiction. This book is the actual experiences of this woman and even though he was not treated as badly as many others, such as beaten at the whipping post, it was terrible what she had to live through. Of course her owner would have had her beaten often if he has not has such licentious desires for her and his lust to fulfill those desires.
