I enjoy traveling by train - as long as time is not too much of a factor!

When I took the train to Fla a few years ago to see Revmitchell - I had opportunity to meet all kinds of folks.

I dont mind flying execpt that dumb TSA rules. They go to the extreme.

Never on MAC, actually I never took leave, or TDY to CONUS, the whole time I was in EUCOM.

It depends. We go home to Alabama once or twice a year for football, as well as a road trip or two for football and we prefer to take the RV.

If it's just my wife and me, then we'll take the car, unless we're going somewhere where we'll want the RV.

I like to drive and, because time isn't a factor, we like to take backroads and explore. But there are times when loading, unloading, planning, etc, is just too much and we'll just jump in the car and go.

But the RV is pretty good to have.

So, the short answer would be I don't know. It depends on the trip and who's with us.

I took the train from Wilmington, De to West Palm Beach in August. I'd rather stab myself in the eye with a stick than do that again.

Not only was the train delayed in Wilmington by three hours, there was an electrical failure that caused us to be delayed another three hours in Washington due to an electrical failure. That means the air conditioner was out and the toilets wouldn't flush, but people used them anyway.

It was terrible. It was hot, the smell was unbearable, and they knew we would be there for hours but it never occurred to them to tell us that we had time to go upstairs into the station and get food.

To add insult to injury, we were delayed so long that the train to WPB that was scheduled after us, actually pulled in next to us at the station. Air conditioning, toilets that worked, and wifi, so we could have watched a movie or come to BaptistBoard to be insulted by the Arminians to pass the time. Nobody bothered to tell us that there were empty seats and we could switch trains.

Keep in mind, folks, that this is a government run train. Enjoy your Obamacare.

I will never take another AMTRAK train again.

Only lv I took while in USAFE was 1 wk 2 help out w/ VBS @ Landstuhl Bapt Mission in 68. No TDYs 2 CONUS--Only 1 TDY: 30 days 2 Moron(!) AB in Espana in Feb 68.

Still had 59 days of accrued lv @ my AD sep in Apr 69 @ MacGuire AFB, NJ, which = $720! [Big bucks back then.]

Today that would have been 4500 dollars

Since you were at Landstuh BM, would you h- ave know SFC Mosher - his PCS was at Zweibrucken and attened the Bible Bap Mission there - but from what I understand they would come up on Sun Evenings to Landstuhl.

    PS
Goverment run trains in Germany are excellent.
When the schedule says the train leaves at 1610 hrs - dont plan on getting there at 1612

Don't recall a SFC Mosher. By the time I left Landstuhl (actually Flugplatz Ramsein) the mission had organized as an autonomous body off of Eifel Bible Bapt Ch (outside of Flugplatz Bitburg) & was called Bible Bapt Ch of Landstuhl. (NOTE to "outsiders": Neither mission and/or church(es) were BBF-affiliated.) BBC Landstuhl just began meeting in a newly-leased bldg closer to the autobahn & RR.

SFC Mosher may have attended BBC Landstuhl right after I left USAFE in early Apr 69.

The family cars are a bit long in the tooth as the saying goes. I can't tell you how many times over the years I've done roadside repairs on one of our clunkers while we were out of town. Had a Volvo 740 wagon that burst into flames in PA once. madre and I piled out, went to the back to get our luggage out, stood there and watched it burn.

Now, when we travel by car we rent something comfortable. No repair headaches and we get to ride around in an almost new car! madre's the travel bug. She take any mode of transportation: plane, train, boat or bus. I just as soon stay home.

My preference has turned to letting other people drive.

Drive when I can...and renting is a good option my brother. The wife goes to Florida once a year to visit her parents but I stay home...I don't like to fly.

Yes, depends (no I'm not that old yet).
    Here at home, by car.

My wifes home, the choice is limited to air or steamer (do they still have those?)
But once there, it is by train.
