"Lord, I thank thee I am not like those poor presumptuous Calvinists Lord, I was born with a glorious free-will; I was born with power by which I can turn to thee of myself; I have improved my grace. If everybody had done the same with their grace that I have, they might all have been saved. Lord, I know thou dost not make us willing if we are not willing ourselves. Thou givest grace to everybody; some do not improve it, but I do. There are many that will go to hell as much bought with the blood of Christ as I was; they had as much of the Holy Ghost given to them; they had as good a chance, and were as much blessed as I am. It was not thy grace that made us to differ; I know it did a great deal, still I turned the point; I made use of what was given me, and others did not-that is the difference between me and them." - Spurgeon

I realize this is not very uplifting, kind of harsh, and doesn't apply to every arminian, it is very general. However, I think it does a great job of showing where the arminian theology goes wrong.

Spurgeon said a lot of great things, and I quote him regularly at Church etc...

He was prolific and thus he was around for a very LONG time, and had ample opportunity to say a lot of stupid things.

This was one of those stupid things Spurgeon said.

I've said a lot of stupid things too. Spurgeon was not immune to idiotic statements. This is one of them.

Yes, it seems that way doesn't it? Specifically a cadre of Y.R.R's. It's like a whole class-load of new Al Mohler disciples decided to "turn the world upside-down"...let them have their fun :)

"Y.R.R's" are cute little creatures actually, I find them entertaining.

Here is Spurgeon's comments on Arminianism in context: http://www.spurgeon.org/sermons/0052.htm

Jacob, you are not Spurgeon (nor am I for that matter). Spurgeon spoke those words as part of a sermon. He spoke them during a time when the Arminian Baptist Union was attempting to eviscerate him because of his Calvinism. He fought fire with fire. But to start a thread with this quote from his sermon does so without context and seemingly for the sole purpose of causing an argument.

    Welcome to BB.

Spurgeon spoke plainly on this matter. Many did not like such plain speaking then. Many do not like it now.

Al Mohler does not teach people to act like that.

Believe me I realize i'm not Spurgeon, although I sometimes wish I was blessed with a mind like his. I also realize the quote was harsh as I stated, but I believe that the Arminian stance is a grave one. Lastly, I actually had not intended to argue, I don't think it would be productive to argue in favor of a quote that presents no scripture (although I believe scripture supports the points it makes).
    God bless

The quote was not that harsh. You will soon be attacked here by those who are not friendly to these truths. We should not be shaken but rather expect it in this fallen world.
Many here have seen a pattern. We offer scripture in context for the most part. It is opposed by carnal philosophy, novelties, and allegations of the dreaded...debate fallacies. Scripture stands however:thumbsup::wavey:

It's apparent he comes into these threads to sow discord as he has nothing to add otherwise. Spurgeon nailed them theologically, and the return answer shows great disdain for the truths he expressed concerning them. It is therefore obvious these would answer Galatians 4:16 to the affirmative.

    Jacob,

I apologize for being a bit harsh in my response to you.

I also believe Arminianism is a grave error. But I am of the opinion that dialog is preferable to harsh rhetoric. Once you put your opponent on the defensive it is very difficult to have a profitable discussion. To be sure there are Arminians on this board who do that often. I am not saying there is a not a time to be hard hitting. There certainly is! Spurgeon did so in the midst of a sermon that repudiated the attacks he was experiencing at that time.

    Anyway, please accept my apology.

No apologies necessary! I appreciate the criticism as I have been known to post without thinking. I suppose I could have found a better way to present the post, as I honestly am not looking to needlessly insult anyone( although if referencing scripture it can't be helped). Anyway, I hope that you will continue to offer any criticism you feel is necessary.

It's good to see owning up and forgiveness for a change. I hope it spreads.

Reformed is a solid elder who offers good counsel. You will enjoy and learn from his posts. Some of us just react when we see you post your first post and receive a hostile greeting. The quote can touch a nerve for sure and yet it is very solid.
Reformed is very graceful in his interaction with those who do not see what we see as truth. Some of us are more direct, less tactful and yet we have similar goals. Looking forward to your posting:wavey::wavey:

NO...No indeed. Picked a name somewhat at random only to imply seminary sycophants discovering new novel ideas for the first time. Mohler is (to all evidence I've obtained) a consummate gentleman and professional.
