Can the local church become an idol

In Sunday school the question was asked "do you believe this church is a bible believing, bible preaching church?" While most loudly proclaimed yes, I silently said half of the time. My church has many issues that I believe we are to proud to confess and deal with. :tonofbricks:

Does your church preach the Bible? Do they believe in the truth of the Word of God? If so, then you should have also said "Yes". It doesn't mean your church is perfect - NO church is perfect.

But as to the title, yes, I do believe the local church can become and idol and I've counseled people out of churches like that. :(

Like I said only half the time. For instance, this morning the pastor talked 45min about where thanksgiving came from and then we dismissed.

The Roman Catholics believe they preach the bible. I go for bible study at the local UMC. They dont think its necessary to be Born Again, teach doctrine, provide believers baptism, not have women as pastors etc. But they claim to be Christians!?! I beg to differ with them though. They do feed the poor & try to help the community & they go out to people in missions so you tell me.....what constitutes a church?

Then they don't teach the Bible.

Just what do they do in "missions"?

Correction......They dont teach the bible CORRECTLY & COMPLETELY. The Minister, a Doctor of Divinity told me that they dont stress doctrine....then he sent me an envelope thanking me for attending the church, glad you found a home & we will have you committed to the church on this day.....(oh really, guess again) LOL

Hmm never thought of the bible being an idol, would you mind elaborating on that?

Any time we place something/someone in place of God, or on same level to us, becomes an idol!

We can see our church as being "only" real NT one in town, only pne preaching Jesus rightly...

can see our pastors as being alin to prophets/Apostles for today...

And some do see the KJV as ONLY version God OK!

Okay, yes I agree! I thought you were trying to say that too much bible was a bad thing, thank you for the clarification.

I'll ask the same question B4L did. Why do you go there? You said for Bible study, though they are against primary doctrines and seem to be apostate.

Now if you had said you go to a so-called Bible study for outreach purposes that would be another thing. Evenso, that would be a tough thing to swallow --you'd have to wade through all that murky waste water to have an opportunity to witness.

it becomes an idol when you see it as being the ONLY version that is word of God, that it is only one that must be read!

same wau your church becoems an idol if seen as being ONLY one teaching real truth, ONLY one worshipping God rightly etc!

... "do you believe this church is a bible believing, bible preaching church?" ...

The OP question is listed above.

The Thread question is "can a local church become an idol"

Two totally different questions

As far as an idol - yes a church can become an idol. When we are told we must be at a church activity at least 8 (eight ) nights a week - then attending church is more imporant than folowing the great commission. In addition that ole Baptist poem comes to mind - Mary had a little lamb -it would have grown to be a sheep - but it joined a Baptist church and died of lack of sleep."

As far as being a Bible preaching church - often a pastor will only zero on a few "pet peeves" rather than preaching the whole Bible.
